I love how I do my best thinking while running.

OK...here's what I think is going on. Low LT, high (predicted max HR). The test WAS a maximal test. I was going as hard as I could for as long as I could (more or less...gun to head thing). BUt because my LT is so low relative to my (predicted) max HR, I wasn't able to approach my (predicted) maxHR. What I got to was (cloase to at least) today's max HR. But with a higher LT, which will be accomplished with more speedwork and specific LT training, I should be able to get closer to my (predicted) max HR.

Think about it: during the test, my highest HR was 186. That's 129 % of LT.

Does this make sense?

I don't know if I buy that or not.  I think you should have been very close to your max HR regardless of where your LT is.  If you're above LT then your body should be pumping as much blood as it can (in order to provide as much oxygen as possible) in an attempt to keep you aerobic and eliminate the lactic acid.  Basically you HR increases in response to increased oxygen demand.  If you were pushing all out then your heart should be giving you all it has.  I guess the real question here is exactly what kind of process the computer uses to estimate your max HR...that would help figure out how it came up with 205bpm.  I certainly don't have enough knowledge in this area so I'm really just talking out my @ss   Hopefully someone smarter will help clear things up.

Yep...no idea how the machine extrapolates to max HR. A good question, though.

The point is probably moot, though. I have what I think is a good number for LT, and I'll use that to establish training zones a la Friel.

Ah yes...that really all that matters here.  Everything is based on LT anyway so you're good to go.
