Subject: I'm gonna Try a Tri
Hello all! My name is Anissa and I reside way down in the South in Rock Hill, South Carolina. I like to keep life "fresh" and I am always wanting to do something new. I did my first and only marathon in February of 2000 and my only goal was to finish under 7 hours so I could get my medal...and I did it (barely) and shortly after that, I decided that one day I wanted to accomplish 2 things, one was to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro and 2nd was to do a triathlon, so it's 3 years later and I can't afford the plane ticket to get me to Africa, so the triathlon it is.
I'm not a swimmer but with some training I hope I can make it, and I don't own a bike currently, but will soon and I am not able to run a mile without stopping but hopefully that will come back to me.
I found this site while searching for training tips and have learned volumes already. I signed up under the Training Logs section to help keep me honest. I look forward to learning from others on the site.
I plan to do my triathlon in August/September of this year....either Greenville SC or Charleston SC.

Hey Chris! Thanks for the encouragement. The events I am looking at are indeed Sprint level. With a 1/2 mile swim (in a pool), 14 mile bike, 3 mile run.

I will keep you posted and you do the same. Thanks again.

And.....it is ALWAYS about fun, isn't it???

I also am training to do my first Tri. It isn't until May 2004. I REALLY need the time to get in shape. The only things that I did in high school was softball and basketball. For the last year I was lifting weights and doing aerobic classes.
I borrowed my sister-in-laws bike and have signed up for a re-fresher swim class (I took lessons as a kid).
My sprint is going to be .5 mile swim, 18.2 mile bike and 3 mile run. I am taking my training slow, but am enjoying every minute of it.

Third in the crowd. 35, haven't done anything competitive since HS, pre-kids. I headed toward a sprint on AUG23. It's still too cold to swim, but I've been biking and running since FEB. My goal is to finish, er, um respectively.
I still trying to figure out what I need for basic equipment. A friend of mine in NC mentioned that I should consider a wet suit for the swim because it help keep your bounency(floatation).
Come across anything neat, let me know

Hey Ztrakboyi
I noticed you said it was still cold to swim. Where are you at? Just wondering. I live on the Gulf of Mexico and have been swimming for the last couple of months.
Have you been on e-bay lately? They have some neat triathlon stuff that could perhaps save you some money, but check into it before you commit to the purchase.

I have elastic in every pair of shoes now. I just love them! It really does save time. Just slip on your shoes and you're gone. Mine are by a company called Yankz. I found them at the swimming shop by me. Another suggestion is Glide. It's a glide on lubricant to prevent chafing and blistering. I love it!

I'm 46 and have been training for my first tri for about 10 weeks.
I'm doing the Danskin in Sacramento on June 22. It's a Sprint Distance .75 swim, 20k bike, 5 k run. I've improved the most in swimming, although I wish I had a more efficient stroke. I've been training very religiously and really enjoying it. I can run for 45 minutes without weeping. My pace is only about 11-12 min mile, so I'm very pokey. Last week I traveled to the Chicago area for a week of family functions, and managed to run twice and bike 3 or 4 times. But between the booze and meat and caffeine and late nights I've come back to real life EXHAUSTED! Since Sunday all I've managed is one 45 minute swim. I'm torn between being afraid of injuring myself running, and running anyway so that I don't lose any ground. The training program I'm following has me lightening my training for the week approaching the tri, which is next week. Would it be a bad thing if I did my 5-6 hours of training in the week before, since this week is turning out to be my light week?

Oh one other thing. I bought myself a pair of those elastic shoe laces, they're called Yanks or Yanxs or something. They are great! No fiddling with shoe laces. My bike shoes already are velcro so that's a time saver.
I bought a pair of tri shorts to wear for the entire event. The first time I did a swim/bike brick to try them out I wasn't happy with the chamois. It had stayed pretty wet and when your sitting on a bike seat a wet chamois is a big NO not to mention OUCH. The next time I did that brick I balled up a towel between my legs to suck water out of the chamois.
That really did the trick and made for a much more comfortable bike ride, plus it lessened the amount of water that was running down my legs as I was putting on my socks and shoes. So my tri ensemble is a black sport bra and black tri shorts with a sleeveless bike jersey to throw on for the bike and run so I have a pocket for a package of Gu.

ok dar, u still have thur, fri, sat and sun this week - plenty of days to do moderate training. don't push yourself. even the second week before a tri u should be tapering anyway. NEXT week u MUST keep it light...end of discussion. no more than 15-20min per workout. u need rest and repair time. u definatley will not lose any ground....u will just be stronger for your tri.

goodspeed and congrats on your most excellant finish.

Thanks for the advice Ron!! I had a couple other folks tell me the same thing, so I won't be stressed about what I missed. I actually did a swim bike brick last night and felt terrific afterwards, so I'm really psyched. Wish me luck!! Oh I think you already did. Thanks!
