OK, this is just a cheap trick to get some traffic to my logs, BUT...

I included an image (vai jackbishop.com) of the cathedral we do our steps in. We is any number of folks in Pittsburgh, but on Tuesdays, it's the mountaineering school.  I think wednesday's it's the Pitt cycling club.  The guy who won the 70-74 yo age group at Kona last year (mabye this year too?) trains here in the winter too.  Go to my log to see the photo.

didn't know you were in Pittsburgh. The Cathedral steps are *no* joke. Have you ran into the ghosts yet?

Geezerette #3 has done the steps a few times with the rowing club.  I am suitably impressed.

I LOVE STAIRS!!!

They have stair climibing races in most big cities...like the Empire State building run, I think. I know there was one here in Atlanta.

OMG...that sounds intense!! Good work!

I've wondered around Columbus Ohio in search of decent stadiums to do stairwork or even some big hills and have come back fruitless.

Pittsburgh also has more steps in the city than San Fransisco does.  There was a book published 2 years ago called "steps of pittsburgh" in which he climbed every flight of steps (outdoor steps) owned by the city.  There are entire city streets with people living in houses on them that are nothign but a flight of steps.

Me too. I used to have to climb 144 stairs just to get up to street level on my way from my apartment to the office. Then, when I got to the office, I entered at the basement level and climbed to the third floor. Ah, good times.

Which stair-streets did you guys live on?  Have you read An american childhood by annie dillard?  She has  a great excerpt about the steps off of Dallas avenue...i havn't found them yet.

I lived near the Straka St. steps in the west end (not true street stairs because they are the terminal point of an actual paved street). They're very shallow, long stairs (I think 103 if I remember correctly from my youth) that go through this sort of wooded part, I saw a snake there when I was a kid. It was our adventure spot.
