Anyone ever done the Disney Olympic Tri as Disney World in Orlando? If so what did you think? How was race course, enough volunteers, well run? What's the low-down on this race? Thinking about making it my "A" race for next year.

disneyworldsports.disney.go.com; then go to the endurance event tab. It's Sunday Sept 24, 2006. I just signed up for it. I figure it's Disney, they do prety much everything first rate. Plus I'll bring the wife and 4 year old for her first trip to Disney. Make it a family thing.

Let me know if you sign up.

I did this race this year as my first Olympic and had a blast!  (my avatar is the end of the bike course).  The course was great and the event was really well organized.  I was really disappointed with the "expo" but that is about the only negative thing I can say.  The swim course was right outside the Contemporary hotel.  The water was almost too warm.  The bike course was easy to follow with lots of volunteers to direct you. and the run through Epcot was a lot of fun with lots of Disney cast members shouting encouragement and 3 water stations along the way.  I can't wait to do it next year!

If you're not a USAT member, you have to pay for a one-day card.  I think it is $9.  To join USAT is about $30 and I found it worth it just for the discounts at Choice hotels.  If you plan on traveling to any races, it is probably worth it.

I've signed up for this one and its my first long distance event ever!

I've heard that the water outside the Contemporary hotel is really gross and they don't usually let people swim in it. Is this true?

I don't think it is normally used for swimming but I really did not find it to be gross, just warm!

If it's like the other lakes that I've raced in around Orlando it's probably the color of well steeped tea. Didn't taste bad, it was just dark. Couldn't see anything. I'm hoping the water at Disney is a little more clear.

I'm planning on doing this one too. I've run a bunch of Disney events and they're always really well organized...so I'm confident in saying that it's worth it.

They usually don't let people swim in the Disney Lakes.  I did Danskin there and we swam in the Lake near the entrance to Disney world between the comtemporary and the Grand Floridian.  It was not yucky and the water seemed clean.  I think they don't want the general public swimming in the lakes for safety reasons and it would be really hard for them to moniter

She's right. They don't want people swimming in the lakes because it's too much area to deal with. Most of the waterways on property interconnect in some way. The lakes are all filtered and controlled...huge engineering project. They can raise and lower the water levels in three hours across property. Pretty cool actually. But yeah, totally safe to swim in when they have an event that requires it.

Cool bit of trivia...when the Polynesian resort opened in 1971, there used to be a huge wavemaker out in the middle of Bay Lake so that guests could surf while staying at the resort. Later on, when beach erosion became a problem for them, they stopped using it. It still sits out there in the middle of the lake, dormant.

Yes, I'm a Disney geek...I worked there for three dang years for God's sake!!

I just signed up too! I don't think swimming there will be a problem. I think it's safe. I live in Daytona, and there are few places to practice my swimming other than the pool. But I'm hoping the pool will prepare me. I'm looking for someone or group to do some ocean swims. Best of luck.
