Subject: Question: bike switches gears by itself
I am a bike novice, so I have no idea why this is happening, but my bike will change gears by itself. It's a mountain bike with 3 gear-switch options on the left and 7 on the right. Whenever I switch gears (it doesn't seem to matter the left/right combo) after I've made the switch the bike keeps clicking and switching gears. Help? Thanks--Tex

Sounds like your derailers ( the gear shifters ) needs adjusting. How long has it been since it's been tuned up?

Cable stretch over time, things get out of adjustment. You can adjust it yourself ( if you feel daring ), but the safer bet is to take it to your friendly local bike shop for a tuneup.

Once you've gotten that tune-up, think about buying Zinn and the Art of Mountain Bike Maintenance so you'll know how to keep your bike in shape yourself. It's oddly exhilarating.

hey tex,
it could be that the rachet in the gear lever is busted, and can no longer hold the derailleur in place. This usually happens if the bike is old or has cheaper model levers. could require new levers if the adjust does not fix the problem. Best left to the bike shop if your not sure how to do it.
