Subject: Cleats or Cages?
I did my first sprint tri last year at the age of 51. This year I plan on being more competitive rather than just finishing. One question I do have. I do my bike rides with bike shoes using cleats. I did last years tri (300ms/10mb/3kr) using running shoes and cages. I really like cleats but feel that the time to change in transition will hurt my time but in the same breathe I feel my time on the bike will be better with cleats. Any suggestions?

Hi Bob
practice your transition with clipless pedals (over & over & over....you get the idea ), once perfected it should be faster than with cages anyway. putting joggers on in the transition will also drop you back in the field for the bike leg - meaning you will have more traffic and you are mentally unable to compete with leaders/other cleat using cyclists. I would suggest that the small advantage made by making only one shoe change is small, and can be eliminated with practice

I agree with Aidan - if you practice, you will make it a fast transition! :-)

The benefit you have on the ride with your cleats normally erases any time lost in changing shoes. I've been tri-ing for a few years now, and I don't know anyone who normally uses cleats who uses their cages during a race. I myself have cages, and have been yearning (YEARNING!) to make the transition to cleats!!

But I'm with the guys, practice makes perfect!!

I think you'll be happy you stayed with the cleats. Also their are quick lacing techniques for your running shoes...

Thanks everyone. Those were my thoughts, so I will...practice-practice-practice!
