It hasn't been a rough couple of weeks out here in Northern California.

On Easter Sunday Alan Liu and Jill Mason were cycling on Hwy 12 as a part of their triathlon training when they were hit by a drunk driver (who later registered .3). Alan Liu was killed. Jill Mason is in critical condition with brain and back injuries.
Jill's family has set up a website at www.jillmason.com where you can get updates on her condition.

Monday night Daniel O'Reilly was sideswiped by a drunk driver on his weekly ride home from work. He leaves behind a wife of 12 years and two daughters, Siobhan, 7 and Erin, 12.

The cycling community here is up in arms. It's a sad, sad time.

I only hope the focus stays on trying to work together vs. pointing fingers at each other when it comes to cyclists and drivers.

Wow, that is tough. If anything good comes of it, maybe people will learn to "share the road."

That's so odd--I was having a discussion with someone about this yesterday, and she kept contradicting the details of the Liu story, and now that you've put this here and I see that there was a second accident, it all makes sense...

as much as it can make sense.

Stay safe, Nancy--

WOW, not good.

This weekend there was a triathlete here that was hit by a guy on a cell phone.  He got out of his car went over to see what he had done and drove off.  Luckily there were some witnesses that saw the whole thing happen.  The guy is in jail right now, the triathlete is in the ICU and not doing well at all.  It makes me very scared to train with all these maniacs on the road.  I just bought a bike trailer to have my sons ride with me, but now I can't see myself taking them out.

I agree about the your sons on teh bike trailer. I used to think that way too when my seven-year-old was younger, but....not with what could happen.

been talking with many cyclists...some have had spouses say..."I don't want you to road ride anymore" and are in a quandry. One told me today..."you can't pick when it's your time to go...." and has decided to keep riding. The front page of our paper today had a photo of the widow of Daniel O'Reilly and his two daughters...which makes it hard to take that attitude, esp. with a young son, but at the same time....to give up a passion is hard....and in some ways I think my friend may be right.

sigh.

Definately a strong argument for bike paths. Most of my training is either on the trainer or Mtn. Bike, simply because of the high drunk driving rate in my part of the country.

I am so deeply saddened by all senseless traffic deaths, and so sorry to hear the news from otherwise beautiful Sonoma. And while I am all for working together with "responsible" drivers, I will not hesitate to "point a finger" at a drunk who chose to drink, chose to drive and wiped out a human life in the aftermath. I say point e'm straight to the pokey!! They'll get all the help they will accept there - and at our expense!

I'm with triman50 on this one. Very, very sad - folks here have been talking bout an increasing lack of care or concern on the part of drivers. If I shoe these articles to my wife she would be scared - she already doesn't like me on the road and I'm a newbie.

the stat I heard is that drunk driving accidents/fatalities hit an all-time low in 1999 and since then have been steadily creeping up....one theory is that most of today's young kids were never exposed to the proactive "don't drive campaigns" that were top-of-mind for most of us older folks.....

There's a huge ad campaign in Australia that's apparently brought down drunk driving fatalities a lot: giant billboards all over that say IF YOU DRINK THEN DRIVE YOU'RE A BLOODY IDIOT. Couldn't say it better myself.

I get a little worried about this very situation. A couple of years ago a guy my age was killed while riding by a drunk driver. The problem in my county is if you ask directions they are usually given using taverns and bars as landmarks because there are so many of them. The main thing I can think of to be safe on the road is to wear yellow, orange, or red jerseys. What else can we do? Sad to say we are just as vulnerable driving a car. Drunk driving is a plague that must be stopped. In Wisconsin, the States Attorney was arrested for dui a few months age when she drove her state owned car into a ditch. Her story was she just had 2 glasses of wine.
Will it ever end?
