I contacted the race organizer and pulled out from the race along with others. The race course for the biking portion was NOT closed to traffic, and triathletes were warned to yield to stop lights and stop signs which became a serious safety hazard (races should not preclude the athletes to SLOW down during the event!). Also, at the time of the swim-to-bike transition, the outside was pitch black with no sign of the sun. Triathlon racing bikes typically do not have standard reflective gear as standard road bikes, therefore, speeding at 20+mph in the dark+cars=poorly organized race.

Badly organized? This was more of a criminal act! Was the fact that the race would be held in traffice advertised? If not, the participants should bring a class action suit against the promoters for misrepresentation and gross negligence! They are just lucky that nobody got injured!!

it actually was advertised, however, the course it turns out was held in an area with stop lights and intersections nearly every block, requiring triathletes to slow down and at times, to even come to a complete stop (what's the point of racing if you have to stop and worry about getting hit?). i felt that safety in this case, outweighed my goal of racing and stretching out before my peak race in a few weeks. the triathlons i have competed in had great organization with police offers and volunteers assisting traffic, no such luck in this case.

Smart move on your part to pull out before any injury or accident, and to contact the organizers about the unsafe conditions they put participants in.
