Subject: wave starts
To my triathlon experienced friends - how frequently do waves start? And how many people per wave (typically)?

My 1st tri will have 3000 people racing, and my 2nd will have only about 250! I'm sure there will be huge differences depending on race size, but I'm just curious! :-)

I have never been to a race with 3000 people before, but most waves are from 50 to 150 people. They start about 5 minutes apart and are divided by age group. Sometimes waves are started based on expected time. Each wave will get a different colored swim cap. Usually you find out more details about the wave start in your confirmation packet, or when you pick up your race stuff. Sometimes, they don't know exactly how the waves will be divided until race morning. Be there ready to race for the first wave, but also ready to wait a little while if you are in a later wave.
Good luck,

Charles
