Subject: One piece or two piece?
See I know how to get your attention...

I'm going to be doing my first tri in July. It's a sprint, but I still want to be as un-noobish as possiblle. I already have the expensive stuff, mainly bikes...so I plan on investing in a trisuit and wetsuit before the race.

So what I'm wondering, is a single piece skin suit better then wearing the two piece shorts and jersy? What's the difference? Either way the only thing I'd be changing in the Transitions would be shoes.

Also if you had to buy one wetsuit, what would it be? Would it be longsleeve or a bib? I don't know what the water temp for the race will be, but I'm betting it won't be warm. Also, any suggestions for brands to look for?

A lot of what you're asking boils down to personal preference, so I'll give you mine (and the reasons).

Farmer John style (sleeveless) wetsuit (QR)  I think it's the best all around suit to have.  The long-sleeved feel a bit constrictive to me (and also cost a bit more).  Unless you are swimming in water well below 60 degrees then you'd be fine in a sleeveless.

One piece tri-suit.  It doesn't offer as much flexibility in the sizes and can be a bit frustrating for those who are "long-torsoed", but even if I did have the stomach I had in college I still don't like the idea of looking like I'm wearing a sports bra (or bro if you prefer) by the end of the race.  They're also a bit of a pain in the @55 when it comes to using the facilities.

I'm opting for separates. I couldn't find a tri-suit with the right dimensions to make me believe it would fit.

I wear an Orca two piece. I got two pair of shorts and sometimes wear them to train. Don't think I'd ever wear a one piece to train in. Also, I wrestled in HS and never liked a singlet and one pieces remind me of them.

I agree w/ Brett on the wetsuit. I just bot a sleeveless mostly cuz the water temps i'll swim in wb around 70. You can get some good deals now at All3sports and Promotion. I went w/ an Ironman Instinct just cuz the price was right.

okay, so if I go with a 2 piece and wear a wetsuit, is it faster to wear the jersey under the wetsuit for the swim, so in T1 all I have to do is shed the suit and go? Or is wearing a wet jersey during the ride going to bug the hell out of me? The jersey I'm going to wear is one of my old racing jersey's that is skin tight, if that makes a difference.

Wear the jersey in the water if you care at all about tranisition time. Putting a tight shirt on over a wet body while racing is pretty much the definition of inefficient.

Try it first and see how it feels. Tri tops are made to swim in so you won't be hindered with one.

I'd suggest you get tri top that matches the shorts it'll dry faster than your bike jersey. Save that for your training rides unless of course your emotionally attached to it!

I prefer the 2 piece try suit. I have never worn a one pice. My reasons are I don't think I would be as comfortable in a one pice, I put my race belt with number attached on and under my top before the swim, restroom is easier in the two pice. Did I say I don't think I would like the constricted feeling of a one pice. In the two pice when I get to T2 I can at my leisure on the run pull my number belt down and turn it around. If I get too hot on the run I can pull off the tri top. I don't care what others think of my fat gut sticking out, my girlfriend think I look good and that's all that matters to me.

I use a promotion full wet suit. I got this for the Escape from Alcatraz tri last year. if your not doing a swim that cold a farmer john style would be fine, the full gives you more optinons with minor drawbacks. I like the promtion for a few reasons, customer service, the wide range of sizes, they will ship two and let you return one if you are close to two sizes. They look real cool and make great super hero costumes.

I am attaching what I use as a checklist if it helps great if not oh well..

Good luck and enjoy your first tri!!

Jim

i also like the 2 piece.  I feel i have more flexibility.  You would want to wear the whole tri suit under the wetsuit...VERY hard to put on a tight tri top on a wet body i tried it last year for the first time and my T1 time was through the roof

vortmax - 2006-01-10 12:52 PM so what is better? The fluid drive, the power glide, or the after burner?

I just looked at their website and I have the powerglide. I don't think that there is a great deal of difference in the suits. When I bought mine the Afterburner wasn't available. They said the powerglide would be just a bit faster for someone who was an expert swimmer. I bought it anyway because it was nice and shinny and I thougnht it looked Kewl!

Looking at the size and color availability, I am guessing that they may be doing away with some of the models.

They have afterburners on jets and they go really fast, so I would guess that is the fastest one...

Give them a call you won't regret it, they are very helpful!!!!

Good Luck,

Jim

looking at their sizing, and the fact I'm a wirey lank fellow (6' 140lbs), it appears I will be forced into buying an afterburner. Oh darn

I thought the definition of inefficient was "Riding a blue bike". I wear shorts and a top, QR sleeveless wetsuit. But like the othes have all said, its personal preference. .

Its easier to go to the bathroom before and after the race when you wear tri shorts and a top. During the race pee in the water or on your bike. If you have to go during the run you're screwed with a one piece. With a two, you can go in the bushes on the side of the road.

After trying a one-piece this past season I'll never go back.  They are just way more confortable IMHO.  If you do opt for the top/shorts combo then definitely wear the top under your wetsuit...try getting a dry shirt on over your wet body.

that could be one of the events at the BT party this spring. we get hosed down and then have to put on a dry tri top. HAHA!! that is funny for me to think about.

My theory in rowing (another sport that worships spandex) was that 2 piece causes a bit of "squeeze" about the middle. Not flattering on those of us who may have a bit of...um..."give" about the middle. Thats why I always went for the unisuit because everything was covered with little chance of bulge.

Never tried a one-piece, I think I would have sizing issues with a L in shorts and an XXL in tops. Anyway, here's what I look like in my two-piece:

Talk about the truth. My very first Tri was this past May 05, Mays Landing NJ, a sprint.
Water temp was nice so I didn't wear my top. When I got to transition I waisted so
much time and energy trying to put my top on. It got stuck on my wet torso trying to
roll down to my hips. It just balled up worse and worse the harder I pulled.

I had to pull it off and start completly over. It was so frustrating. All my friends and family
were there for my big Tri debut. I'd say I lost a minute. On the next 4 sprint Tri's that
summer I wore my jersey into the water. Wow did my t1 time go down.

Someone mentioned that a two piece is better for using the "facilities". I can see how
that is so true on a HIM or Ironman. But if your just doing a sprint there's no reason to
use the facilities, so a one piece is all about preference. My .02

I have the Team Javelin one piece tri-suit and like it a lot.  I usually take a medium in clothing sizes but the size Large tri-suit I got is a good snug fit.  I'm pretty scrawny at 5'11" and 145, so I don't know how a real he-man would fit in one of those suits.

Going to the bathroom is only a minor inconvenience -- it's only a moment to just unzip the front, and slide the shoulder straps off.  It goes back on easy.  Of course you're upper torso is exposed, but that shouldn't be a big deal for the guys.  I wear mine under the wet suit.

Someone mentioned not thinking they would be comfortable in a "constricting" one-piece.  You honestly owe it to yourself to at least try one on. I don't like the fact that tri tops ride up my mid section and that the shorts typically have a waist band that is tighter than the rest of the shorts.  A one-piece solves both of these issues.  There is a nice continuous transition from top to bottom without any additional material, pressure points, or potential for bunching up.  The suit I have zips down the front to below my belly button if I get hot and I've easily peeled the top half off and let it hang behind me if it gets extremely hot.  The materials and so light that it doesn't feel at all constricting.  The only drawback is that it takes an extra 30sec to get the bottom down if you need to lighten the load before a race but that is a small price to pay for the improved comfort during the race.  I'm not saying they are for everyone but I was honestly impressed with how comfy it was.  Also keep in mind that it will loosen up a bit once you get in the water so what might feel just a bit tight will likely be perfect once you get racing.

I think the sizing is based more on height than weight.  I also have the Team Jav suit but I got a medium and it's perfect.  I'm only 5'9" but weight closer to 165.  I think the material has more give in the "out" direction than the "up" direction.  I'd say if I were another inch taller the large might be the way to go.
