If I run at lunch (at about 12:30), then go and swim after work (at about 5:45) or is it only a brick when I run then swim or bike then run right after the other? I ran at lunch today and will swim after work.

Joe,

Generally speaking a workout is considered a brick if there are (2) workouts done immediately back-to-back (regardless of what the sport is). Whether it be a swim/bike brick, bike/run, etc... it's still a brick (or transition workout) if the workouts are done immediately after each other.

With regards to your question, you are not doing a brick because of the time between these workouts. If you run on your lunch and then swim after work, that is not a brick as there's 5hrs between workouts.

Hope that clears things up.

Thanks Brian,
That's what I thought, but a co-worker said it would be, so I checked with the experts ;-)

What you did, I like to call a double. Two work outs in one day. Part of the benefit of a brick is a longer workout. Your heart is going non-stop at a higher rate. Doubles are still a good workout and an important part of tri training.

Well, when I got to the Y tonight, I did a full weight set (all machines), then went out to the pool, did a couple of warm up laps, started my swim, did about 8 laps when they said I had to get out for the Masters swim!! The coach then said I could join them if I wanted!! Now this was my 4th real swim. So I swam with the masters, I was in the slow lane (which was OK with me). I did the whole program until the last set, it was kick board. My calves cramped so bad, I could not get out of the pool. Finally I worked it out. I feel really sore already. The coach asked me if I would be coming back. I think I will, it was very tough, but I liked it. Not bad for my 4th swim!!!!!
