Subject: Run testing....help me decide when

After not using my HRM for 3 months I finally sent it in to Polar and just got it back. I have observed some unexpected readings. My HR is very low relatively when I do trainer rides. While my run HR is very high. I missed about 5 weeks of running from the end of Nov-December due to illness and a soccer injury. It puzzles me and my coach so he wants me to do time trials running, biking and swimming next week. I'm trying to figure out when to do them.

The run testing is hard since I get home from work after dark. Doing it at lunch at work isn't practical since it is very hilly. It is best to do it where I can easily repeat it and I know the route which means doing it from home.

Here are the options:
1. Tomorrow I have a 6.5 mile run planned as I try to determine if I can recover and get ready for a 1/2 Mary in 5 weeks. My coach suggested I do the 3 miles time trial first and then continue running another 3.5 miles. Seems very difficult...since I'd be going out hard to for the first 3 miles.  Weather looks okay for tomorrow.

Doing either 2 or 3 might mean running when it is nasty cold since the weather looks bad next week when I'd do the testing.

2. During the week I could get up early and run before I normally get up and before work but I'm not much of an early morning workout person.

3. See if I could leave work about an hour early one day and go home and do it as dusk settles in.

I guess I don't want to do option 1 since I hope to have a nice long run and get the okay to train for the 1/2 Mary....I worry that doing both will be not a positive step towards recovery and building up distance and it is scary to think of doing.

IMHO I would do it tomorrow and just not worry about the last 3.5 miles. If you do it right, you won't have enough left in you for another 3.5 miles. With 5 weeks to go I don't think missing this one workout is going to hurt, especially when you are still running and you are missing it for a purpose (not just being lazy). Idealy you also want to not run for 36 hours after the test for proper recovery.

I wouldn't suggest number 2, as you will not want to be at work after it. All you will want to do is go home and soak in an ice bath.

Why is this puzzling to your coach?? Of course your heart rate is going to be higher when running b/c your zones are higher!!! Maybe I missed something.......

My HR for my long runs is to be 146 or under. After not running with my HRM for 3 months and using RPE scale, I have done a couple of runs with my HRM. My HR averaged in the 160's and I wasn't breathing hard, I felt good. Normally when I do a tri or 5K my HR is in the 160's but I feel I'm giving it my all. So there in lies the puzzle...my HR is out of context with what it has been over the previous year of training with it.

Yet when I ride the trainer, my HR is lower than it has been in the past.

I know I'm fitter now due to lots of hard training, my resting HR is down.

It would be easy to just do the 3 miles today and be done. The 1/2 Mary is in 5 weeks and my longest run to date is 7.5 miles. My coach is going to determine if he can ramp up the mileage quickier than he thought based on how I do on my long run today...so I want to do it.

Kathy,

Having just done the LT run test with Jorge yesterday, I can tell you that, if it were me, I wouldn't even think about that extra 3.5 miles. Jorge had us walk for 5:00, stretch, get back on the mill and run "uncomfortably" for 10:00, then kill ourselves for 20:00. That had to have been the longest 20:00 with the last 3:00 being the absolute worst! If I had gone any harder I would have thrown up--Seriously! Even though I only covered 3.75 miles in the 20:00, there is NO WAY I could have thrown on another 3.5 miles at any pace.

So, my advice would be to keep on doing what you've been doing until the 1/2 Mary is over--5 weeks out, in my unprofessional opinion, is no time to change ANYTHING! Then, after the 1/2, hook up with Jorge for an LT test as he'll take care of taking all the info down and all you'll have to do is run.

Best of luck,
Rob
