Subject: Cold water swim booties/gloves?
Go the latest Inside Tri mag last night and was looking at some of the gear. Saw a pair of swim booties, and they also mentioned gloves, for cold water.

Just wondering if anyone is using these and if they are legal in competition (The water at MooseMan is going to be chilly!)

Thanks for any feedback.

Rob - DON'T DO IT!

A friend bought booties for mooseman last years (as the water was VERY cold) and she doesn't handle the cold very well. Anyway, she wasn't able to swim well with those and she end up getting rid of them in the middle of the swim. Are you worry about it for mooseman? As long as you jump in the water before of the race and warm up for 10-15 min you'll be fine... We should plan a trip to Winnipesaukee in May

I used booties at Mooseman last year when it was a brisk 58 degrees. But I did practice with them 2-3 times in ows before the event. You know the drill never use/do anything new on race day.

I bought mine at Promotion so they are made for tri swimming. They are made out of the same material as my wetsuit and were about $19. I also used them at tris that have very rocky enterances and exits to the swim. I used them maybe 3-4 times last summer with no problems. Many people coveted mine.

I also bought with the advice of my coach a wetsuit hat that looked like one a kid would wear again from Promotion with a stap under your chin. It makes you feel about 5 degrees warmer and when it is 58 it makes a big difference. I just put my swim cap over the swim helmet/hat from Promotion.

I know hat and botties are legal. Endorfun encouraged people to get them last year repeatedly in their emails to race partcipants.

Thanks for the replies, folks. It’s not that I’m really that worried about Moose, just figured if I did buy them, and we could use them, why not. But, when it comes down to it, even if I do get them, I probably wouldn’t wear them on race day anyway.

But… I have been thinking about trying to get some OW swims in before Moose and the warm gear would sure be nice!!!

Thanks again,
Rob

Water's gonna be balmy at Mooseman!!!! I won't jinx it, but the lake isn't even frozen right now. Last spring was the coldest, wettest in history. As long as we don't repeat that, the water should be mid 60's. I'm an absolute cold water/weather weenie, but once you get going you're fine. A neoprene cap helps, or double up your swim cap. We'll have extras on hand to give out, if it's neccessary...Rock on!

my pleasure! Just keep the faith, and pray for a warm spring
Last year was freakish....cold and rainy for about 6 weeks straight. Up at the transition 1.5 weeks before the race. It was UNDERWATER, about 1 foot underwater. There were actually ducks swimming in it. We bought a big sump pump, and kept it running everyday. Unbelievable. the ground was so saturated with water, that everytime it rained, it just flooded it again. Then, 4 days before the race, the weather turned from 45 and rainy to about 88 and sunny. Quite a change. Race weekend was HOT. No one was prepared for it, as the weather had been so crappy leading up to it...

Keith you guys did a great job getting transtion dry and useable last year!

From all the cold weather training and then the hot day...it was brutal on us that were on the course a long time (ie me).

I can't wait for this year...I'm not out of the water last this year and  I'm not finishing DFL again!!!

I did Mooseman with a sleeveless wetsuit.  It was chilly at first, but 2 minutes into the swim I was fine.  It wasn't as bad as I had expected.  I think last year was probably a cold start too, since the water temps were lower than normal for that time of year.  A few people wore extra head protection, but most didn't.
