Underestimate the power of goal setting! I re-learned an old lesson this week, and I thought it should be rebroadcast here as we all gear up for race season. I've had 3 days to ponder a race I ran Sunday. It was a long distance , one that I had not competed in before, so I had no benchmark for myself. I set a goal of a 7:40-mile pace. Guess what??? Lo and behold, I ran 7:39s! I missed a trophy by 1 1/2 minutes and first place by 3 1/2 minutes! What if I had set a goal of 7:20, or 7:10 or even 7? My guess is I would have hit it because that was my GOAL! I know I don't have to tell this group to set goals - that's who we are, goal setters. But set 'em high my friends, set 'em high. There can only be one better feeling than finishing, and that would be doing better than you ever thought possible!

Thats a good pace in any case Triman...congrats on your result. At least now you are establishing benchmarks, something to shoot for in the next event. Keep up the good work!

Ok, so maybe just finishing without puking might be a bit low for goal setting.....

Thanks I needed this! I'm doing a 5k run race this Saturday which originally was for "fun", however I'm now going to go after my 5k PR. It's being run on the same course that I set my 5k PR in Feb, so I know what to expect from the course. At the last 5k race where I had no goal and was out for a sprint tri training run, I ended up just 6 seconds off of my PR. So this time I'm setting a goal to obliterate it, 6:50/mile it is. I will report back on how I did...

Thanks again!

You bring up an interesting point. I have my first tri coming up in about 8 weeks, and I set a goal of 3 hours total for myself. It is a 3/4 mile swim, 24 mile bike, and 5 mile run. I can do the swim in 20, and the run in 45, but my biking needs some work. Is it realistic for me to think I can do the bike and transitions in under 1:55? Or am I setting myself up for disappointment?

bootygirl:

You may want to set degrees of goals.

Minimum goal - don't puke
Real goal - only chunky burps
Stretch goal - not even gagging

Who knows, by the end of the year you might actually feel good throughout a race :-p

Reiley,
Every tri transistion is setup differently so trying to say you are going to have a T time of x:xx is tough to do. It depends on how long you have to go from the water to the first transistion timer, to exit timer for the bike start, how long it is from the bike entry point to the run exit point, etc.

Even if it takes you 5 minutes to do the transistions combined (my last tri the T's took me 4 minutes total) that means you will avg about 13.5 mph for the bike (1:50). What are your average speed for your training rides?

My average bike speed varies from day to day, between 12-15mph. The course for the race has a monster hill in the middle of it, so it will really depend on how fast I can get up that. It's about 2 miles long, and it took me about 20 minutes the first time, and 15 the second. I did a mini-tri yesterday to get a feel for where I am (half the race distances) and it took me 1 hour 40 minutes. The bike is really my weakness, so I guess I will be kicking that up a notch over the next 6 weeks.

Boy oh boy I set myself up for disappointment :-) I forgot one fundamental item about running a race, RUN YOUR OWN RACE!
At the 1 mile mark I was feeling good and was close to my target time with a 6:58 mile. I was running with a pack a runners I've seen from some of the other local races so I decided to pace of them for the second mile. At mile 2 marker I was shocked that we slowed down 30 seconds. It didn't feel like we did but I think we all got bit by the heat bug too. After 1.5 miles or so miles we had a 5-10 mph tail wind that did nothing for helping you stay comfortable. I decided to see if I could lead the pack in and hoped that someone would come up and push me in, but nobody did. I tried ti run it in hard to the finish but I got very hot the last half mile or so with absolutely no air coming across me to help to cool some so I didn't do my usual kick either. I ended up 25 seconds off of my PR :-(

Later that day I felt extremely wiped out and took a 2 hour nap with my daughter (priceless!). Yesterday I had joint aches & pains and was in bed right after the Soprano's (WTF was that about!) and woke up this morning feeling like crap with chest congestion and coughing. Not sure if that factored into Sat's run or not.

Well back to my Olympic training once I feel better...

Don

Ok JoeR,

my new goals:

minimum - no puking, but possibly wishing for death to end it all
realistic - to finish with full control of digestive track and not wanting to die
stretch goal - to run, not walk, the greater part of the run portion, have full control and wish not only to live, but maybe do it again....

Well, if one could replace the run portion with, say, boat rowing or tennis, maybe I might "kinda enjoy it". But running is evil.

Hey Bootygirl
could you please send me detailed info on your training reg. I am more like a couch mashed potatoe and the thought of doing anything for a half hour makes me want to puke except of course sitting on my couch...........just getting started so I guess I am just beyond having one cheek still firmly planted on a cushion................I think I may have to go and puke all this typing is wearing me out....................thanks for the laughs........
