OK, so my nephew got me an assortment of gu packs as a stocking stuffer gift for Christmas. During the gift-opening frenzy, my son decided to tear one open.

Since long-distance training was a ways off at the time, I just Scotch-taped it shut and saved it with the rest. But, now I'm wondering about spoilage of a nearly pure carbo-gel substance being open to air at room temp for a few months.

Any thoughts? Hindsight, I should've froze it.

My guess is that it is probably OK.  But I'd still chuck it.  It only costs @ $1.

It'll be fine! Eat it!

What flavor? Are you going to eat it while you're working out or just to try it at home?

The people who are telling you to throw it away aren't thrifty like you are (I say that b/c if you weren't you would have thrown it away after he broke it open). Don't waste a good Gu!

surfwallace - 2006-03-07 3:28 PM I had some e-gels that for one reason or another had a crack or hole in the bottom of them. They had just a little bubble of hard dried gel on the bottom. No big deal. I used them at a 20 mile race and they went down fine. I did have a horrible race but that is another story. FYI-it is a bad idea to run with said holy gels in your hand. I ended up with sticky hands which made me end up with a sticky forehead and nose and hair and...

Some companies (like Hammer) sell gel in multi-serving bottles. If you can open one of those and keep it around for a while, I'd expect that you could do the same with a packet, particularly if you've taped it shut.

Thanks for all the feedback on a fairly inane question.

Yes, Comet, I'm thrifty in a weird not-wanting-to-waste kind of way. I'll entertain the thought of $150+ on a wetsuit I may use a couple times a year but not throw away a $1 gu. Explains why I haven't bought a cycling jersey yet - piles of perfectly good t-shirts that need wearing out first.

In the interest of science, and to satisfy the sadistic ones, I'm eating it. But I think I'll do it as post-workout refueling - I'm not about to do the green-apple two-step 15 miles from home!

That was my thought.  I just bought some in bulk and asked them how long it lasts after opening the container.  They said for best results to use it by the expiration date (after opening), but in reailty it had a shelf like of like 10 years, as long as it doesn't dry out.

If you can down a Big Mac and a super-size fries with no ill effects, I would think a little stale Gu shouldn't pose much of a problem.  I remember eating a worm as a kid and nothing bad happened to me!  (No smart aleck remarks Comet!)
