I haven't run with my dogs lately, but in the summer I run with them regularly.  My buddy who training to qualify for Boston runs with his dog all the time and on Saturday they ran 18miles at about 7:40 pace (Not a flat run either).

I used to run with my dog, but she got Lyme's and has arthritis from it. We've tried working her back up to it - but the most she can do now is about a mile and half. But, she sits and cries to come with every time I get on running gear. Poor woof - she soooo loved to run. She's actually the reason I started running - she had so much energy as a young dog that I had to do something to wear her out!

Are there any recommendations on how far you should run with a dog, for your dogs health & safety???

This is like asking how much should the people on this board run. It depends on what kind of shape you are in and what kind of physique you have and what sort of genitics you were blessed (or cursed) with, how long you've been running, how fast your run and where you run.

Jake the Wonder Dog and I have been training for a while together. Jake's wife Joanie is not quite the athlete that Jake is so I don't take her running with me.

The thing is, you have to keep an eye on you dog to watch for signs of fatigue. Jake usually runs out in front of me (on a lease) but when he starts to fall back and run beside me, I know it's time for a water break/rest.

I think it has a lot to do with the size of the dog too...just like with people. Jake is a big dog and easily keeps up with my stide - I'm 6'3". He doesn't even really 'run' per se...while I'm doing my 'marathon shuffle' he's just kinda jogging.

Your vet would probably be the best source of information on that - so much  just depends on the individual dog.  Mine is great for walking (as long as you like to stop every 30 seconds because he must sniff something!) but he's got so much fur, running is just out of the question for anything but really short distances.

My dog is my training partner... Irondog!! She is a Border Collie/Aussie/St Bernard Cross and she will be 5 this summer. Well, her real name is Karmalina. The first 10 minutes of every run is generally a pain while she spends her mandatory first few blocks trying to get her head halter off... then she settles into the groove and she is a fastastic partner... although I think she prefers to run with my husband... my pace is so slow, she is basically walking.

I have occasionally been guilted into bring my 13 year old Collie/Beagle Cross, but she is a sniffer. She also limps when her paws get cold in winter. She has 0 body fat!! Last week I tried bringing her, but in the first block I ended up being so frustrated I picked her up and carried her home.

There are pics of my girls in my albums... I can't seem to post the pic.

Rogillio - 2006-03-12 11:07 AM I ran my long run this morning with Jake the Wonder Dawg and we ran 10 miles! We ran the 10 miles in 1:39:10 so just under my normal 10 min/mile pace. We stopped once so Jake could drink from a ditch. He actually laid down in the ditch while he was lapping it up and looked back at me as if to say "What are you looking at? You too good to drink from a ditch? Suit yourself!" Jake is a good trainer! Anyone else run with their 'best friend'? Two tips for running with dogs; one, make sure you allow them to drink and two, allow them to gradually build mileage. Jake and I started running 5 miles and have gradually worked up to 10. And three, run early in the morning before the asphalt gets too hot - keep in mind they are running barefooted. ~Mike

What kind of dog is Jake?

I have a yellow lab and I have run with her a few times.  Problem is that she never wanted to run at my pace.  Now that I have a bg back yard, I plan to let her run most of her initial burst of energy in the backyard before I take her running so that she wants to run at my apce.  Dogs are great training partners- they definitely help keep you going.  Bella usually looks back at me like "c'mon let's keep running, why are you slowing down?  This is fun!"

Here is a picture of Jake and I in the pool. Jake love to swim and if you jump in he feels it is his job to jump in and swim over to you.
