I am preparing for my first USAT santioned tri.  I have heard that MP3 players are not allowed. Is that true?  I also use a handle bar mounted GPS to provide speed and distance info. Are those allowed?

Refer to section 3.4.  I don't see anything referring to GPS units.

Last year I asked Charlie Crawford, the person at USAT in charge of rules and officials, about GPS units. They are entirely legal. There have reportedly been instances where race officials were unclear on this. Charlie is a very nice guy, very approachable and dedicated to us athletes. *

MP3 players (or more specifically headphones and earphones) are not even a little bit ok. *

BTW, at a race last year I said "thank you" to a race official for spending a beautiful Sunday morning on a race course so I could race. She was truly surprised that someone showed appreciation for what she was doing.

In addition to thanking volunteers this year, I would encourage everyone to say "thanks" to the officials after the race. They don't have to be there, but they are and it makes race day possible.

 * note that these rules apply only in the US.

How about bike computers?

Bike computers are ok too.  Unless you rigged it up so it will pedal for you......

In addition I would also encourage all to just say thanks the next time you are getting a water from a volunteer.....The volunteers are what make the race so great!!!!!!!

And of course leave the mp3 player at home....it is a no no.

When the use (or non use) of MP3's was mentioned to me I took it to be because they were deemed performancing enhancing.  As I review the rule 3.4(i), it appears that it is a saftey issue. Not being able to hear traffic etc. I assume. Then it stands to reason that other GPS and computers would be allowed.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
