I am still debating whether I should sign up for a race in May..
Reasons for:
- It's a cool thing to do on a birthday
- (see above)

Reasons against:
- Cold OW swim (historical temp would be in the mid 60's. I have a shortie wetsuit which I got from Costco.. Wonder if I can use it.)
- Longer bike and run (20mile and 5 mile)
- It's only a little more than a month away!
- An hour and 1/2 drive

Should I? Should I? Or should I hold off and do something in early June instead?

It's air. Website said "wetsuit recommended." Wonder if I can save $200 and use my Costco shortie suit.

By saying it is "only" a month away, I assume you are implying you might not be as prepared as you'd like to be.  If that's the case a race you are not sure you want to and doing underprepared might be a bad idea.  Doing a race you really really want to do but are not ready for is different.  I think YOU sound like you should find another race, there's plenty out there.

OTOH, WTF, go for it.

I will add a comment on the subject of a cheap-o wetsuit.  I thought I'd be smarter than everybody and buy a cheaper wetsuit and use it for water-skiing and tri's.  Cheap wetsuits are NOR DESIGNED for freestyle swimming.  In my case, the neck area wasn't sealed real well and water flowed right into the suit as I propelled forward.  Not long into the swim, it was like swimming in a huge barrel of water around my midsection.  And COLD water at that.  TERRIBLE.

Maybe yours would work, but, try it out first.

I would do it.  It would be a good way to kick off your season and get you excited for your next race!

GO! GO! GO!

Sign up today- - as others have stated, you will regret not doing so.

I've found that the best motivator, for me, it to just sign up and pay up.

Mid 60's is cold? Lakes around here don't get much above that EVER.

I know this isn't a question you asked, but I've got to address something here -- that wetsuit you got at Costco isn't made for swimming, as much as it says "watersports" on the tag. Think windsurfing. Yes, it was inexpensive. But as it pertains to triathlon, that's where its plusses end. Not trying to be harsh about this.

If you're looking for an inexpensive wetsuit, take a look at the ones from NeoSport at Chucks Bikes, or others. Last I heard, Chucks had them for $90 for the mid-calf sleeveless.

Well I say go for it. Than again I drove 24 hours down to my first triathlon in Florida, raced the next day, and immediatly drove 24 hours back all while trying to get over the flu. On second thought maybe you shouldn't listen to advice from me.

Do it, but don't hurt yourself in the process. You've got a month to get some hours biking and running.
