In the past 3 days I've done 2 25 mile rides (cheers & clapping here...) I thought I'd post the elevation profiles because they are totally different. Both rides originated from my house, but one is almost completely flat, with maybe 500 feet elevation gain at most, the other is completely hilly with about 2500 feet of elevation gain.

Alternate them for best results! (when you get to feeling really frisky do them both for a complete 50 miler!)

I'm not sure when I'll feel THAT frisky! Besides teh 2 loops go in different directons, so the 50 miler would be bow-tie shaped. I'm not a fan of bow ties.

When I'm ready for the 50miler, I'll extend either one even further...so maybe 15 miles flat, 20 miles hilly, finish with 15 flat!

Notice that the very end of the flat ride has a vertical climb of a few hundred feet. No way around taht one no matter where I bike to!

I love that stuff.  Someday I want to be that techno-geeky.  Now I'm just geeky.  My friend who is also doing his first tri with me this summer but not on this site lives at the end of the street at the bottom of a steep hill.  It's all farmland behind him so the one street is the only way in and out of his neighborhood.  Whether he's running or biking his first 3/4 of a mile is a ridiculously huge climb.  For a beginner it makes it tough to get started but he's going to be well prepared for hills.  The real bummer is you can't take advantage of the downhill on the bike coming home unless you want to burn out your brakes or end up in the cornfield.

It looks like the money spent on the new bike was well spent....Thanks for the tip on using the bimactive website.   I just used it to check the elevation on one of my rides..it is really a useful site.   Here is a 12.5 mile route that I ride once in a while..it is an out and back..the return trip is much quicker. It's about 1750 feet of elevation gain and then back down.

I don't get it.  Is there a huge cliff at the end of that loop?  Shouldn't a loop course begin and end at the same elevation?  looks nice, though..

Scroll to the right, it keeps going. Problem is that I'm ascentaphobic.

Hills, what are those things? I heard that they are evil correct ;( I live by the ocean (not surprisingly) so I never really encounter any real hills during any of my rides unless you can't the occasional bridge which usually isn't very steep. I put my 10 mile run route from today in and it didn't register any change in elevation, it was about 18 for the entire route. Usual bike routes would be about the same.
I am so screwed if I do IM Lake Placid next year Must find hills which basically means driving to go running and biking which doesn't totally make much sense to me

Thats awesome.  Do you all use gmap to get your elevation changes.  Is there any other free online website to do this??

4 miler

That is pretty cool - So here is my usual (from the house) 4 mile run - would this be considered a hilly run? I always wondered if it had enough gain/loss of elevation to count.

birthplace of warhol?  Must be Pittsburgh- my thighs are burning just thinking of trying to ride my bike there.  Back in grad school at Pitt I was scared to drive some of those hills.

Yes, Pittsburgh. Now that I've ridden some of the hills, driving them is not nearly as scary! Regarding my location info...after that football team won a big important game, I figured my avatar of Jerome Bettis holding the Vince Lombardy Trophy with my city being "City of Champion(s)" was probably getting irritating. So now I just post random factoids about the city!
