Had my second sprint tri yesterday. Blew my PB in the swim getting out of the pool just before 8 minutes with my arms practically falling out of my shoulders. Quick transition and jog to the bike...feeling good...tackle the hills...get low against the wind....*pop* Had a blow out going downhill. Tried to steer off to the side but it ended up being a workout in bike dismounting while on the move as I crashed into the ground. Tire was twisted and took a while to get off of the rim. Finally got it all fixed up and pumped up with my Co2 and noticed there was a bit of the tube wrapped up in it. Partially deflate and go at it again...all set. Wrestle the tire (had to be the back tire, of course) back on the bike...*POP* Over-inflated it so now I'm stuck with no catridges and one more tube. Feeling deflated, not unlike my tire, I start to walk with my bike, the two miles back to the race start (thank goodness it was a loop) just as my training partner flies by and asks if I have everything I need. I say I need a cartridge and he pops one out and gives it to me. Life saver! I'm so freaked out about overinflating (plus there's a big hole in my tire) that I'm riding on a really low tire. Complete the first lap, then the second and realize I'm the only one on the course. I called it a day. I can swim through pain, run threw pain but I can't freakin' ride with a low/flat back tire. I hate my bike.

What a herculean effort by you to try to stay in the game! Can't tell you how miserable I feel for you regarding your tires. That is one of the worst-luck stories I have heard. You'll get 'em next time.

Triman- Thanks!

I feel like I'm having more than a little bad luck with my tires. Wondering if it could be something I'm doing or if it's just bad luck. I've had my new road bike about a month and have already had two flats and three blow-outs. My tires have a max psi of 125 but at around 90 they feel really hard. I hate that Co2 dispensers don't have a gauge. Can anyone recommend a good, small pump I can carry with me that has a gauge?

I had an older version of this topeak until a week ago when it cracked (it was 7 years old and had not been treated kindly). I'm about to get another! It has a gauge and acts more like a floor pump so it's easier on the hands, but is still light.

Is it possible there's something wrong with the rims? I'm no bike expert, but when I have a specific string on a guitar break repeatedly, the reason is usually a burr where the string contacts the nut or the bridge.

You bring this with you on rides? Where do you put it and how do you attach it?

Yup-I take it with me. I have a little clampy thing with a velcro strap, something like this http://www.performancebike.com/shop/Profile.cfm?SKU=283. It holds the pump on underneath my top tube.

this may be a really stupid question but it's something I know I'd probably do...which is why I'm asking...when you change the flats, before you put the tire back on and reinflate are you running your fingers along the inside walls of the tire to make sure there isn't a rock, glass, pebble or something sharp in there that keeps getting wedged at inopportune moments and causing the flats?

and I had a ride sunday and of course had a big fat flat from a big fat nail.....

That sounds horrible! But I think I may be of help with the new pump. Crank brothers makes a very small mini pump that will fit in your seat wedge bag. It is about 20 bucks and can be had at your local bike shop or they can order it. If you have a REI in the area they have them cheap. It even has a high pressure/low pressure switch on it and it accepts shraeder or presta valves so it can be used on a mountain bike as well if you ever need it. Hope this helps. I love mine. AL.
