Anyone signed up yet? THis will be my first half and I'm so pumped.

Reading the thread from last year and the race reports that have been posted and my takeaways so far: sunscreen, bug spray and a janky 8-mile stretch during the bike.

Good luck to all. Looking forward to sharing training reports and progress leading up to April.

This will be my first half as well, so pretty excited about it.  Haven't signed up yet (but already have a reservation at the KOA).  I'll sign up by the end of the year before the price increases.

I'm thinking flat is a good plan for a first half!

I'm still trying to decide between this and IM 70.3 Disney. This would be much cheaper for me since I live in the area. It will be my first half also.

I don' t think the janky part is as long as 8 miles, but maybe I'm wrong.  You definitely need to batten down the hatches for that part.  Although I don't think I can do it this year, I like the race.  Good luck to you all!

Was that rough section on Highway 17? Because that is in the process of being widened and repaved as we speak (er... type).

I'm thinking of doing the sprint. I was a spectator last year, and it looked like a well run event.

Keep us posted if you do sign up!

No, it is on the section right before you get back to 17.  They are changing the course this year, I think (it will be a point-to-point course) , but I don't think they can easily leave that part out.

This will be my fist half as well. Looking forward to it as I am familiar with everyone that runs it so it should be a fairly solidly ran event. See y'all out there.

The nasty part of the course is Halfway Creek Road from Steed Creek Road to Guerin's Bridge Road. It's about seven or eight miles long. I've done the TryCharleston sprint, though not the half (the sprint doesn't feature Halfway Creek Road), but I've ridden on that road dozens of times. (You'd think I'd know better by now.)

What exactly do you mean by "nasty"?  Rough roads, potholes, turns?

Very rough roads.  Not really potholes (though maybe there are some), just constant and significant vibration.  (Just this side of cobbles.)  As you are about 40 miles into the course at that point, it can really grate on you as well.  My first year dong the raceI was in a late wave and by the time I got there it looked like a bike shop had exploded on the course from all the flotsam that had been ejected from bikes.

I think part of the road was resurfaced between the first year and last year. The rough  started shortly after you crossed 17 from east to west and didn't really get much better until you got back on 17. This year it seemed to start well into the swamp. It really isn't that bad compared to some courses I have been on where there are people flatting every quarter mile or so but it does shake you up. I did keep checking to see if I flatted. The expansion joints by the bridges are pretty rough and that is where the bottle ejections were taking place. There was work being done on one of the bridges and that segment was terrible. I would be willing to bet this area is resurfaced this year. Maybe one of the locals can check?

It hadn't been resurfaced as of a couple of months ago.  I can check this weekend, though I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for them to resurface Halfway Creek.

This will be my first HIM. Heck, this is my first triathlon period.  Going to knock out Myrtle Beach Marathon in February before this one.  I'm using a 16 week plan, so I'm in training mode with some longer runs due to the marathon prior.  Looking forward to meeting some fellow triathletes.

I have never done a triathlon.  Running my first full marathon (hopeully) in March.  Just started riding the bike a little....I signed up for the trycharleston sprint.   Is this a good first timer Tri?  I am assuming I will need a wetsuit as the water should still be pretty cold?????

Water temp is very likely to be wetsuit legal, but not so cold that you'd need one, especially for the sprint.  Good luck in your marathon.

Like Michael said, the water should be barely wetsuit legal in the upper 70's. 78 is the cut off for medals but you can still wear the wetsuit up to 83 degrees. I would not even consider a wetsuit over  78 degrees. Below 78 I always wear a wetsuit because it knocks 10" per 100m off my swim time.

As far as a good first time race it depends on the swim. It is a 2 loop swim for the half people and they put the sprint people on the course with them. If you are a strong open water swimmer you will be fine. The bike/run are flat

Looks like I'll be doing the half, going to register this week. This is 1 week after the Palmetto 200 which I'm also doing. Ill probably also do the bridge run, so a busy 3 weeks.

Really considering doing this race. I only have one question, and this is the make or break on if I do a race, is there a problem with dogs on the course?

I doubt that there is any problems with bringing a dog to the event if that's what you are asking, Charlesotn is pretty pet friendly overall, but I think racing with the dog is frowned upon...

HA HA!! No, I don't want to bring my dogs. I'm asking if there are vicious dogs on the course, specifically the bike course. I was almost mauled by a vicious dog on a century ride last year and now I decide on races based on how safe the bike course is.
