So I was all set to race this weekend and just found out that it is already full. I tried to register online but it wouldn't allow me to even thought the deadline hadn't passed. The race director confirmed my fears so it looks like I will volunteer instead.

Now, I know that the IM's fill up in days and some of the bigger races in weeks but how is it that even the local races fill up?

Running is my background so I know from experience that only a handfull of races on the East Coast actually reach their limit before race day.

Is it b/c the field is small? The race I wanted to do had a limit of 500. I looked at the past few years results and there weren't that many finishers.

Maybe it's just bad luck.

Can anyone chime in on their experience. I am pretty bummed.

Come to Wisconsin, one of the races I registered for got cancelled due to not enough people and "safety" issues whatever that means. The biggest disapointment is the race was only 20 minutes from my house. there are many events in SE Wisconsin and everyone can't do every race so some are likely to be unattended my problem is exactly the opposite of yours.

all the races around here fill up fast. Sometimes you get lucky and score a late entry tho, right Max? People sign up as soon as the apps become available and for one reason or another, many aren't able to get to the race on that day. That's why the fishers list looks short as compared to the number of available entries. People would rather take a chance than risk being shut out. I know that's what I do. Last year I signed up for 4 races and one injury after another prevented me from racing for the whole season. Two entries I was able to transfer to another triathlete, the other two I had to eat. Live and learn I guess.

Sorry to hear that and I can totally relate to you. I just recieved a phone call two nights ago letting me know that my cheque was recieved but the Qualicum Beach Tri that I was going to race is full. It is quite a bummer to get news like that after all the training we put in. I guess it is a lesson for us all. Register as soon as possible for all your races that you are hoping to race!!! My only saving grace is that I have one more to go late in the summer. I hope you find another to race!!!

Are you talking about the Cape May? If so and you are volunteering, let me know. I'll be there by myself, am scared to death and can use a "friend".

Ellen's right...sometimes you can go by the popularity and how many years the race has been held. And often the locale determines the size of the field and how fast it fills up. Races in a scenic location go quickly. I couldn't believe the Hyannis race on picturesque Cape Cod in MA, with a field limit of 900, was filled a month before the race. I was lucky to snag an entry that someone else wished to swap.

I missed out on two races because they filled within weeks of registering several months ago. It just depends on the race. If you know it is a popular one try to find out when registration opens and sign up. If for some reason you can't do the race you may be able to sell/transfer your entry.

Yeah, that's disappointing.  Most tris in this area fill up months before.  I signed up for one in August in April this year!!!!
