Subject: Help answer questions about my new Cervelo P2

I just made a big impulse purchase on the Cervelo P2.  Was hoping to get thoughts from the BT folks about the following.  Feel free to comment on 1 or all:

1. What is the deal with hydration. What are your thoughts on the best setup? I was thinking the big bottle in between the aerobars and one on the bottle cage on the downtube.  Longest race i will do will be a 70.3

2. It comes with a compact crank.  I am used to pushing the big gears.  Should I give the compact a shot or try and swap it?

3. I know most people use the CO2 but I love my mini pump.  Is it totally Fred to mount a mini pump on a tri bike?

4. I need a saddle bag.  Are there bags that work better on tri bikes?

5. The FSA brake calipers seem kinda cheap.

I think that about covers it.

I would try the compact crank, carry the pump in training, but not in races, water bottle mounted torpedo style between the aerobars and one on the downtube, the FSA calipers are fine, but the pads (if yours came with the one piece style pads instead of a cartridge style pad) are cheap, but also easily replaced.

I love my P2. I am sure that you will too.

1. I have used a profile aerodrink between the aero extensions for the last two years with another bottle in a cage, zip tied behind the seat. I am switching to a "torpedo style" water bottle on the extensions this year, still with the bottle behind the seat.

2. Don't know enough to advise on the crank.

3. I use a CO2 cannister taped to one of my seat rails. You presumably bought the bike get more aero and the pump is going to mess with that--but probably not much? Plus, I can get my tire inflated closer to working pressure and much faster with the CO2 than I can with the pump. Buy a couple extra CO2 cartridges and practice this at home. It seemed intimidating to me at first but it is easy.

4. I don't use a saddle bag. I have a tube, a tire lever, and a CO2 head stuffed in between the rails of my seat, above the seatpost, and held in place with a little bit of electric tape. I have never needed more than this for an on the road repair. Anything else I need to carry (ID, cliff bar, gel) goes in a jersey pocket. With that being said, if you really want one, there are some small bags that will probably mount nicely.

5. My brakes have always worked fine.

I am a bike idiot but I thought I would give you my solutions to the same issues.

Agree with this.  All the compact does is give you a little more 'small-gear' and a little less 'big gear' for the same cassette.  If you do ANY hilly tri riding, you are likely to be better off with the compact.  I use a small wedge saddle bag--nothing special--enough to carry a spare tube (or 2), CO2 system & multi-tool.  I carry a mini-pump on training rides in one of my jersey pockets.  I also sometimes add 2 water bottles behind the seat for long training rides.

I have the big, dual-cell Aquacell thing, and it's great. For 70.3 training, that and a cage on the downtube should get you through. When I got into long IM training rides, I had to put on two seat-mounted cages, even with a refill stop half way through the rides.

2. It comes with a compact crank.  I am used to pushing the big gears.  Should I give the compact a shot or try and swap it?

Try it and see.

3. I know most people use the CO2 but I love my mini pump.  Is it totally Fred to mount a mini pump on a tri bike?

I don't know what Fred is, but how long does it take you to fill a tire with the mini? Are you OK with giving up that amount of time (and energy) during a race in which you flat?

4. I need a saddle bag.  Are there bags that work better on tri bikes?

Bento boxes are great. I the Fuelbelt large and it'll hold snacks, phone, CO2 stuff, etc.

5. The FSA brake calipers seem kinda cheap.

I haven't had any problems with the calipers. My pads wore out in about six months.

I think that about covers it.

X-labs mini bag. The velcro straps are longer to make it around the aero seatpost, and it holds the essentials. I have one on my transition and my sweetie will have one on her P2 soon.

http://www.xlab-usa.com/products/storage/mini-bag.html

Downtube water bottle, and zip tie a cage (I got profile cage for $2.88 from excel sports) with a water horizontal between aero bars.

X2, picked mine up on Friday! What a deal.

1. One bottle on the down tube and someone gave me a PD aero bottle for between the bars. Bottle exchange during races. Should be adequate. Long training rides are done on my other Cervelo, an R3

2. I never even thought about changing the crank. What's so bad about a compact? I have other cassettes for my race wheels.

3&4. I cannot imagine using that little pump during a race. CO2 is quick. It's a race bike! Bento box and tape everything else under the seat.

5. No comment really, they work, what more do you need?

Congrats on the new bike.

According the Cervelo tunnel tests (White Paper), a bottle between the handlebars is the way to (lowest drag coefficient). An aero bottle on the downtube is also a good choice.

This is a quick interesting read.

Me too - picked it up on Friday. I have the dual chamber Profile Design in the aero bars and a bottle on the down tube.  Tried to put my saddle bag behind the seat and it didn't fit.  Luckily I was riding with my peeps and they offered to spot me a tube

For my longer rides I will need another bottle as the one "extra" is not enough to get me to the pit stops on our IM training rides.  Thinking of putting a 2 bottle hydration system behind the seat and use one of the openings for tubes, C02, etc.  A buddy of mine has a bottle cut in half, fills it with tube and C02, etc and puts it in the other bottle slot.  Might try that before I buy a new saddle bag.

Going in for a BG fit on Saturday as I am a quite a bit uncomfortable in aero with the new set up.

enjoy,

Duane

Anyone have a picture of their torpedo bottle on the aerobars setup they could share? I have a P2 and would like to do this, but not sure how it should all work. Just a bottle cage held on w/ some zip ties between the extensions?

I use this

Almost certainly overpriced for what it is, and not to hard to rig together a cheap alternative. But it really does work well. Took me a couple of outings to get used to riding it, but I soon got the hang of it. In my last tri the position turned out to be quite useful: at the last aid stage I deftly grabbed a bottle from a volunteer and discarded my old one. Only to discover that the bottle cap (sport bottle) was missing, and the water was sloshing around all over. So I rode the last 10 miles in aero with one finger over the end of the bottle.

I tried the xlab thing and didn't like it when I was trying to mount it, so I returned it and picked up a set of the profile design sticks.  They worked great, although the paint on my bars did get scuffed a bit.

I picked mine up on Sunday!  I also bought the xlab sonic wing that allowed me to add 2 cages and a minibag. plus it has space to allow mounting a co2 holder.  Probably spent more then I needed to on this set up, but i like it.

Streamers!

I was thinking the same thing while they were getting ready for my fitting last week. They had a big rack of glittery streamers and I asked the person setting up the bike if they thought it would help.

I am also guilty of picking up a new P2 during the promotion.  Add me to the  "can't find my bike in transition" club.

A question for everyone that has a bottle mounted between the aeorbars.  Where do you mount your cyclometer?  I currently have a cateye mounted on one of the aeorbar extensions and will have to move it to install a bottle.  I guess I could use my watch to see the same data but there is something comforting about having my data right in front of my face without having to try to maneuver my wrist all around to see my watch.

Won't it still fit on the stem? The bottle should be a little more forward, or doesn't it fit?

I have a Joule and I'm still figuring out where best to put it. It's kind of big.

It may fit on the stem.  I am picking the bike up today and will be able to throw it on the trainer and decide the best place to mount it.  I was just thinking in my mind that things were going to get pretty crowded with a bottle and computer all mounted in the same place.
