Had a bad and somewhat ironic bike day today.

This past weekend I had planned to change out the chain and my cassette but cause they were worn and had been skipping., but the parts didn't come in until today (Nashbar shipping is slow).

On my way home two things happened, the first is that my seat moved (a lot). Then as I was shifting gears CRUNCH the rear derailleur skipped into the wheel and was RIPPED off.

So anyway, I have to buy a new RD.

ouch. Make sure the rear hanger isn't bent too.  It ripped off the derr but didn't trash any spokes?  You were either lucky or 40 miles from now you'll start snapping spokes

ABSOLUTELY get a new deraileur hanger. If you are on a steel frame, you can have the frame checked and straightened if necessary.

The hanger snapped clean off, so I have to get a new one.

I think I am going to let my LBS look at it and tell me exactly what is needed.
