Subject: Long time Athlete 1st Time Tri-Athlete

Hi everyone!

I've been an athlete my entire life playing in sports ranging from volleyball, rowing, figure competitions, track, etc.  I am looking forward to being involved with a genuine group of people that all have the same goals of competing in a triathlon.

I'm so new to this, I don't even own a bike yet...so...any of you who are upgrading or selling your old ones, hit me up!  I'm 5'10 and about 1 34" inseam - I have no idea how measurements work for bikes, so when I see a 43 cm bike...well, that says nothing.  I guess I need to go get fitted for a bike.  I just don't want to purchase a custom one.

Anyway, I'm from Austin, TX and am super excited to be here!  I look forward to speaking with many of you.

Sincerely,

Morgan

Hi Morgan, welcome to BT and tri! Love your enthusiasm.

You definitely don't need a custom bike. Actually, for your first triathlon (unless you'd just like to have a bike for other reasons, too), you may as well just beg/borrow/steal/Craigslist any kind of bike that you can tolerate riding for a while. That way, if it doesn't turn out to be a lifelong obsession (you were warned! don't say you weren't!), you didn't blow several hundred/thousand bucks on a bike.

Welcome!!

Borrowed a bike for my first couple of races and several months of training. It wasn't a perfect fit, but it did the job and saved me some $$$ until I was sure I wanted to continue riding/triathlons. Borrowing a bike also helped me figure out what I did and did not want on the bike I ended up purchasing. Plenty of good bikes to choose from without having to go custom.

Bike sizing is not evident until someone shows you what the measruements mean. Try riding some firends bikes to help determine what feels comfortable. Austin has a large bike community. I am sure you can find a great deal on a used bike there. Also check out the Texas forum here on BT.

Welcome.

Thanks for all the feedback!!  I was looking into Craigslist and I'm pretty sure that's what I will end up doing.  None of my friends are willing to give up their bikes for long periods of time for me to train on! Frown

Thanks again!  I can't wait to get started...better late than never.
