Through a generous bonus from my bosses I am able to buy a Garmin 310xt, along with the bike cadence sensor, which is great since my bike computer is in its death throes.

I have enough for the foot pod but am not sure if I need it. I never run indoors. Ever. But do run in the rain, cloudy, foggy weather on alot of tree covered trails.

Is the foot pod a good addition? Do you have one and really like it? Or any other info appreciated!

Thanks! I'm excited to finally get a Garmin!!

I have a foot pod.  I use it since I train in the winter on treadmills...but it's also a backup for trail runs or bad weather in case I can't find or lose a GPS signal.  I picked mine up for $45 shipped to my door.  It's a reasonably priced insurance policy that I can get the data that I want to see at all times.  I find that always having the numbers to focus on keeps me on track.  Left to my own devices it's easy for me to deviate from my plan.

I've used a 305 and cadence sensor for 3 years now and the only time I wished I had the foot pod is for this race I do once a year inside an industrial cave where you get no GPS signal. I get a signal outside even in bad weather so that hasn't been an issue for me. When on dreadmill I just use the built in distance and time and 305 for HR. Hope this helps!

Big proponent.  LOVE mine.  There is an indoor track at the gym and if it's ever too cold or too dark and I need to get my run in, it's 10-15 minutes away and on the way to and from work.  Also sometimes the satellite takes too long and I just use the pod.

I've come to loathe working out on treadmills.  Boredom, sure, but also I love setting my own pace and being able to run and easily change pace based on feel and sprint without adjustments.

Finally, a running question I have a lot of experience with. Running in the rain, fog and generally crappy weather. I have the foot pod but only use it if I'm on a treadmil. Otherwise the GPS works fine in all sorts of weather (it will on occasion get lost in the trees, but i've not really found that to be an issue as it doesn't take long to relock and I've never seen a track be off because of it).

I have one that I bought for treadmill workouts, mostly.  I do enjoy checking on my running cadence occasionally, particularly when I'm playing with changing my pace, so that's another bonus.

I've never had a problem with losing a GPS signal due to weather and if it happens due to buildings or trees, it usually picks it up fast enough.  Long tunnels are another problem, but generally such a small portion of the overall run that I don't sweat it.

I had to take my pod off my shoes recently because it kept interfering with my comfort when using a TRX.  I haven't put it back on again and I find I don't miss it.

Fun 'toy' but I probably wouldn't spend the money to buy one if this one gets lost or something.

The foot pod is great if you want consistency or do lots of treadmill workouts. The GPS signal as many threads have stated previously are not as accurate as some would like. Just use GPS to do the same run a few days in a row and you are likely to get slightly different distance for each run. I got it for shites and giggles because I figured after the watch, HR strap, speed/cadence, what was another $35-40. I think I picked it up for $35 off Amazon with shipping.

I run on some really deep coverd trails and up and down.  I have yet to drop a sat lock on my 310xt.  I did add in the qucik release for the bike and am enjoying that part.  Skip the footpod, IMHO

Just got mine and love it.  I got a Garmin FR60 because I didn't really want a GPS watch - I just want to know how far I go, no need to know my route.  Works great.

Have you considered upgrading to the 910xt with the extra money?

Unless you are running on an indoor track, or plan to monitor your cadence, then I see no need for the foot pod.  The treadmill already tells you your pace, just hit the lap button every mile and you'll now time, HR, speed info.

And I find that my GPS signal is really good - and although other talk about the inconsistencies in distance, I've never had an issue.  If my run is .01 mile off from the previous days, I really don't care because it's statistically insignificant.

Um, the cost of the 910 vs the cost of the foot pad.  Funny.  all combined, watch and accessories is still not close to the 910

Rather than buying a 310, bike cadence and foot pod, I would buy the 910xt and bike cadence/speed sensor. That is exactly what I did and the price came out the same.

Interesting.  I guess I thought the Garmin 310 came down more in price then it did.  It comes out to about a $50 extra purchase to get the 910xt (note, I have the 910xt + the foot pod cause I had it already, I use it for cadence
