Subject: 0 to 1650 in 6 Weeks?

I can't remember how I stumbled upon the "0 to 1650 in 6 Weeks" swimming program, but I just started it this week, having completed the first part, which was "Zero to 700 an Easy Preamble to the 0 - 1650" plan.

Has anyone else done this program? What are your thoughts, and were you successful? How realistic is the goal?

I'm finding it challenging (okay, it's been 2 days) and can't believe the next week has me going from 100 yards to 200 yards, and the following week doubles again to 400 yards, etc. Anyway, I'd love anyone's feedback, and suggestions for other swim endurance building programs that might be out there. Thanks!

Haven't done the program, but I think it's completely realistic if you are dedicated to the plan.

Good luck!

Just finished the program two weeksago. I found it very manageable.

Trust the plan and believe you can do it.  Just keep moving through the water by any means necessary.  I was in your swim suit (lol) 4 or 5 years ago and now it is easy.

I used to think 26.2 and 112 was a long way, but I started with a 5k and 20 mile goals for those.  Now, it is a time game...

I followed the same program and it's very attainable. Although, the first two weeks not drowning was really my primary concern.

I'm completely new to lap swimming although I've been in the water my whole life.  I'm also got a very good run endurance base but am finding that it doesn't translate to swimming very well.  That said, I'm doing a 4-week preparation before starting the 0-1650 plan.  Right now I'm swimming 800-1000 yards 3x week, but I have trouble doing much more than 75 yards at a time.  My workout this morning had 1 100-yd set, 3 75-yd sets, and a ton of 50-yd sets.  I'm just trying to increase the number of 75 and 100 yard sets until I can do the first day of the 0-1650 plan.

worked great for me.  I spent probably 6 to 8 weeks swimming twice a week and swimming just a lap or two before spending minutes at the end resting.  Never made any real progress.  Started this plan and the first couple weeks were brutal! But I did what it said and pushed through and whatever week it had you swim 1000yards, the last day of that week, I just kept going and did my 1760(cause come on, 1650 just isn't really a mile!) Seems like once you get to a certain point you break though a bit, but those first few weeks are the toughest.  Plan works great though, just push through and you'll be swimming a mile in no time.

Then everyone will tell you to stop swimming a strait mile and start working on sets and such...

I'm in the second week of this plan too!  Haven't found it to be too bad, but I have a habit of losing track of laps and bet I will lose track when I'm swimming the 400 next week.

I have done the program 3 times now...whenever I come out of hibernation and pick up swimming again, this is my goto plan (although I condense it to a 4 week program).  Highly recommended and highly doable.

I try to do this plan every Winter to get ready for more specific training later, but I must admit I vary it somewhat. This year I'm doing two weeks for every one week of the plan, and replace one plan swim per week for a drill session. I do this because my form is poor enough as it is, and i need the drill session to avoid lapsing into the swim thrasher I used to be.

I'm doing it! It is totally doable. The worst problem I have is I am definitely slowtwitch because I always feel pretty bad after the first 50 until about 300 then I am ok for the rest. I find I am actually skipping ahead weeks and doing some modifications. after the 2nd week I was feeling good after completing what it said and had the time so added more. I've been swimming 1650 yds ever since, just smaller increments. today I did my second day of week 4 but was feeling good so did an 800 instead of 600 and dropped the 50s. Do what you can, do what you have time for. Always try for that extra 100, I'm amazed at my progress and you'll be really proud of your own! Good luck!

yep,
Subject: RE: 0 to 1650 in 6 Weeks?

I did it back when i started swimming and it worked.  I think by the 5th week I was able to swim 1600 with very little problem.  I do like how it builds your endurance slowly.

Good luck.

GreenMtnLabbit  - How is the swimming progressing?

I've modified the program a bit but I like how it's structured.  It's given me a good base to work from.

I think it is very doable.

If you think in terms of time v distance, you're talking about going from a low estimate of 3 minutes to swim 100 yards. Then 6 minutes of swimming, then 12 minutes. Cardio-wise, very much within your reach.

When it stops being challenging, that means your body has adapted and it's time to change up your workout.

When I joined high school swim team (I had been swimming for 8 years by then), we had newbies whose first pool workout was 2x500 yard warmup. Granted, those were teens and presumably energetic, but some of them were not athletic at all. We always finished practice with a 500 cool-down, so 1500 just in warmup and cool-down. I think a 1650 goal is very attainable for anyone.

Good luck and happy laps!

I did it quite some time ago.  It worked great for me!  I did take a bit longer than 6 weeks, though.  Sometimes I had to repeat a week.  No biggie.  Good luck!

I just looked up the program, and I think it'd be perfect for my weekly schedule.  Thanks for sharing!
