Subject: Training Locations in the Norfolk/VA Beach Area

I am new to the area, as you may recall from my last thread asking about local races.  I have learned that the only way to cycle safely is to load the bike in the truck and get out of the city.  Two more requests for information:

1. This may sound stoopid, being surrounded by water and beaches, but where are the best places (safe and clean) for OWS?  I amvery close to the Lafayette River, but have beentold by my neighbours that it is not clean enough to swim.

2. I have (crazily) entered the Nation's Harbor HIM in Aug.  Clearly, that course will be hillier than any place that I ride in Hampton Roads. Where is a good place, within a reasonable drive, where I can ride on topography similar to that in MD.

Thanks!

You can come up to Williamsburg and ride the Patriot loop. Not to hilly but the gradual increase in elevation is noticable. The original bike course for the Patriot a few years back has a nice hill on it.

Pungo Ferry bridge is the closest thing to a hill around here, but repeats get boring. Best we can do in Hampton Roads is to ride into the headwinds! You have to go to Richmond or beyond for real hills. OWS in the Chicks Beach area is pretty nice. Just pay attention to the tide. Fat Frogs in Chesapeake has a great Tri-club if you are interested....

A swim option on the bay close to Final Kick. Swim the between the "sticks".

Can't offer much help for hills.

OWS are held at Chicks beach. (great neck and shore dr) behind the McDonalds.

Rides are all over. we lack hills on the southside. But there's some hilly terrain on the peninsula.

Thanks for the suggestions. I ride with FF Chesapeake about every other Sunday and want to join their tri club, but it's too far for to make it to work after the morning sessions, or to get there after work for the evening start times. It looks like I'll be riding hills around Williamsburg. I can drop The Tolerant One off at the outlets, then get in a couple of hours on the bike. I'll try Chicks Beach for the swim.

I find that cycling early in the am is possible.  I commute (17.5 miles one way) to work about 3 days a week.  If you get out on the road around 4:30am most people are on the highway and traffic is minimal.
