Subject: Wearing hats/shirts of races you didn't do.....

What the heck, it's Friday and the OP is apparently keeping the lid on that flip turn thread.....   When I started I would have voted for #2, if you didn't do the race, don't wear the shirt.

Then, after a friend started giving me tech shirts or hats from destination races he went to, I moved to #3, and figured I could wear a HIM shirt/hat, or even (gasp) an IM shirt (I have one of those from New Zealand) since I've done those distances.

Now I am really more of a #1 guy.  Wear whatever the heck you want

However, I still wouldn't wear a shirt for a race I was registered for until after I completed it.  Unless, of course, I DNS or DNF.  then I'd wear it.   I know, makes no sense

You?

Well, I generally don't wear race clothes much anymore (most of it is gone), but I've never worn something from a race I didn't do. But that's for me, personally. Mostly because I never had the opportunity, but partially from the fact that I just don't believe in it.

As for others, I wouldn't ever know if a person actually did a race or not, so wear whatever you like. I'm not offended or bothered by it.

I'm in the "who cares what people wear" category.  You could be decked out in a pro kit in a spin class for all I care.

Several years ago I signed up for the Disney marathon. I got bronchitis about 6 weeks out and was in bed for 3 weeks. No way I could race, so I never even went.

They mailed me the long sleeved race shirt.

And I wear it.

Not an option on the poll; but I'd wear whatever I had while training but not out socially.  Meaning, if a friend gave me a tech tee for a race I didn't do, I'd be fine wearing out for a training run.  But, I wouldn't wear that shirt out and about in a social function.

Make sense?

I've worn a T-shirt from a 10K I signed up for but didn't run.  I had run it the prior two years, though.  Other than that, I haven't come into possession of race gear that wasn't from a race I completed.  I probably wouldn't wear gear from a race I didn't do, only to avoid the questions.  "Oh, no, I just got this from a friend."  But I couldn't care less if someone else does.

All but the part about the wearing a tech tee to a social function

Last year the ironman store had a tent sale and I bought Tri shorts for $3 and tops for $3. I hate wearing them because people ask about the races. At $6 for a kit though I couldn't turn it down.

It's like that ad where the woman says she wears yoga pants because she's too lazy to wear regular pants.

I would add a rider, though, that I wouldn't wear clothes that said "finisher" on them, even though that's the inference.  I've noticed at WTC Calif. 70.3 though, the hats don't say "finisher" on them any more for some reason.

So add that to the pipe and smoke it

Some of the running races around here give the left over shirts to the homeless.

It would be pretty embarrassing if someone asked you about the race and you had to say "oh I didn't go the race, I just got the shirt".  Or at least I would be embarrassed.  To each his/her own.

I have a shirt from a race that I wrecked on the bike and DNF.  I wear the shirt, I say wear whatever you want and if you left skin on the course its more than okay!

Just thinking about all the stuff we wear as a society.  People wear football jerseys all the time and don't necessarily get asked if they play.  I guess race shirts are different.  Though, I can't remember one person asking me about a race that I've done because it was on my shirt.  Now I'm rambling, Friday.....end of day....bored.

More people ran just the LA Marathon last year than have played NFL football in the last 10 years combined, so I think the odds of someone wearing a Packers or Giants jersey also having a Super Bowl ring is a helluva lot lower than they are that the person wearing a marathon t-shirt actually did the race...and I suspect people get that difference.  Just saying...

Personally, I wouldn't wear gear from a race I didn't at least start.  But that's just me...if someone wants to imply to the world that s/he did an Ironman or marathon or whatever that s/he didn't and don't mind setting people straight on the rare occasions they are clued in enough to ask, then, hey, whatever floats your boat.

Personally I would not wear a race shirt I didn’t race in.  I do wear my shirt with much pride.  I even bought extras if available.

I don’t thinks I would care if others wear a shirt they did not race in either.  It is surprising whenever I see someone wearing a race tee shirt I ask how they liked the race.  Very often they will say I did race it or someone gave me the shirt.  It’s ok!

Oh I get that and agree with you.  I'm just musing about all the stuff we wear.  I once bought a t-shirt at EMS and it had "Climbing School" on it.  I was asked a few times if I did their school.  I don't even know if they have one.  Anyway,  just observing.  Clearly I am making no sense on a Friday afternoon.

I did a HM earlier this year and the tech shirts they gave away said "Finisher" on it with the date of the race.  It made me laugh when I say people before the race wearing these shirts.  I commented to my wife that these people must be really fast if they could finish before the start gun ever went off! Wink
