Whats up everyone!

I thought I better stop lurkin around and go ahead and introduce myself. My names Chase and I'm 21 years old. I was a pretty good distance runner (PR's 1500=4:10, 3000=9:10, 5000=16:30) in highschool. I could have ran for some small colleges but passed on that in exchange for partying. Very bad decision. But I am now gettin back into shape and entering a new phase in my life. I just started the Original 13 week training program in preparation for the Deschute Dash (Sprint) in Bend Oregon. After only 3 years of not so good shape, I feel like I will be able to jump back into the training i hope. As of right now, I don't have a bike so i am basically doin all my workouts at 24 hour fitness. Purchasing a bike is my next venture...I want to stay cheap for my first bike and then reward myself with an upgrade further along. Any affordable entry level bikes?? Well thanks for readin and am lookiing forward to the world of triathlons.

Don't know if this is helpful, but one of my girlfriends just bought a Trek 1000 for about $500. I think it had ultegra components and rides quite nicely.

Ya, I love this site. Theres everything you could possibly need. Also, if you go to race nexus in your user menu at top of screen, you can search for your race and add it to your race schedule. I looked it up and I saw that some other people from this site are competing there. Ya, you should post your results after the race. Good Luck Bro!

PS: Who's John? ...on your runs

John is the pastor's son at the church we just started going to... We are into a lot of the same things. Try to go running on saturdays at webster park.

Welcome to BT, both of you. Sounds like with your running background you should adapt to the training pretty quick. As far as bikes go, I got me a nice Felt 80 that wasn't to bad, only $800, I know they have some other models that are less expensive as well. Good luck with your search, there are a lot of bike brands out there, try them out to see what feels good to you.

Okay so as far as bikes go there's entry level, and there's what I did. I went to St. Vincent de Paul (like Goodwill) and bought a really old but functional bike for under $10 and then took it in and had it tuned and other stuff. I guess it all depends on if you know you are going to stick with it (I didn't at the time) and how much spare cash you have to spend. Yard sales are a good place to look. If you don't mind riding around on a bike as old as you are!!! It's really really easy to spend a lot of money at this, but it can also be easy to find ways to spend less. I know the spare cash I had at 21 was all in the change jar in the kitchen!

Thanks everyone for the responses. Ya, I am the type of person who would just go out and blow all my money on something new. $800 sounds closer to what I should spend considering most tri bikes I have seen have been around $1500. A garage sale would probobly be a good idea but I think I would just be so much more excited to get out on the bike if it was all new and shiny. My only concern is that I keep with the training. As of right now I feel that I am in for life and a new bike would be a good investment but only question is if this excitment will stay. Thanks for the tips and I will have to go check out the Felt bikes since I haven't seen any that cheap around where I live.

Good luck with finding the right bike. With regards to keeping with it, one thing that I have found that keeps me excited is trying new events. If you have 13 weeks for your event, try siging up for a 10K, or a bike race before your event so you have something in the short term that you are working towards as well.

That sounds like a great idea. I think it would be good to sign up for a biking race since I have done alot of road races whien I was in highschool. The weird thing is, is that I have no idea if I am good at biking or not. I guess jumpin into a race would give me a good idea, even with minimal training. I will figure things out as I go along i guess. I am hoping to really get into this sport and make a run at competing at a high level. Thanks for the idea.
