At the Sarasota Y Sharks Oly last weekend there were 15 penalties handed out by the two USAT officials working the race, all on bikes: 13 for drafting, 1 for an illegal pass on the right, and 1 for not keeping to the right.

This is pretty typical based on my experience over the past three years.  Drafting is always the big issue.

I'm hearing alot of that lately. Only 110 registered for my race so hopefully won't be much of an issue as it seems to be more prevalent in the larger races.

The one issue that I didn't see that is made clear around these parts is making you have bar end plugs.

Good list and word to live by ...

Been waiting to rant about this since completing Gulf Coast HIM last weekend:

- Drafting is cheating - period.
- OMG, for the love of all that is good, STAY TO THE RIGHT when on the bike!
- When passing, pass the cyclist - don't cut them off, pass them completely.
- iPod while running should be more than a variable time penalty.

Thanks, I feel better now.

At the Sarasota race last week the transition volunteers (me) were instructed to check all of the bikes for bar end plugs and race numbers as they checked into transition.  One of the LBS's had supplied some extra bar end plugs in case they were needed, but fortunately we didn't need any.  The USAT officials then walked through the transition area and checked all the bikes again after transition had closed prior to the race.

A couple of newbies didn't understand why we were checking the plugs until we expained the "cookie cutter" scenario to them...
