Subject: 2-a-day workout order

Does it matter that I prefer to do the 2-a-day workouts in the opposite order they are listed in the plan?  They have them all listed either swim-bike or bike-run.  I will probably always bike before running.   However I really like to bike early in the morning during the summer and swim at night.

I would think it doesn't matter as long as I get both of the workouts in but maybe there's a reason they are listed in that way.  Anyone else train in "reverse order?"

I vary the order of my work outs to avoid boredom to my mind as well as my body. I maintained the same order at one time and found that I was getting fatigued quickly. Rest, then started again, switching the order on a weekly basis.

At present, I do something similar to:
MON - Swim am, bike pm
Tues - core am, run pm
etc.

Then switch it the following week ie:
Mon - core am, bike pm
Tues - swim am, run pm
etc.

The third week, I may change my rest day/s and make a different pattern and so on............

I know I'm constricted by work hours, pool times, group training schedules, and weather that I can't possibly fit in my two-a-days in the planned order all the time, nevermind actually doing them on the planned days. Life gets in the way, ya know?

From a coach's perspective I would rather my athletes do the workouts in "race order" if possible. Sometimes you just can't do them in order and it's ok, but you should really try to do them in order if at all possible.

I use two-a-days to fit in all the training I want to complete. I workout at lunch instead of going out to lunch and at night after my son is in bed. Sometimes my schedule at work precludes me from getting the right workout in, so I flip the workouts as needed. I agree that it is best to get them in as much as possible in race order, but sometimes it isn't possible.

Do what you can when you can, but stick to your plan.

There is no particular reason that they are listed in that order.  These 2-a-days assume you will have several hours between them and they are definitely not bricks.  Do them in any order you want provided it works for you schedule and are not 'tired' for the second workout.  They definitely don't 'have' to be race order since you will have lots of time between and if you are building in higher-intensity drills or speedwork, then perhaps you will want to save those for the last workout and keep the 'slow/easy' workout as the first...so you are fresh for EACH workout.  Or maybe the opposite will work and the hard workout will be first followed by the easier 'recovery' workout.

So alot depends on the time between workouts, the length of time of the workouts and how you are actually going to spend the time doing them.  Go by feel and how your body responds to them.

Thanks everyone.  I guess it is a pretty individual thing.  I'll just have to experiment and see what ends up being the most productive setup for my schedule.
