Subject: pool tri swim question

I have my first tri ever in 2 weeks.  Due to surgery a few weeks ago that took longer than expected for recovery, I have not spent much time in the pool.  All these plans I had for swim lessons..etc..has kind of gone by the wayside for now.  The swim is short ( 150 yards ), and I can make it..not without stopping a couple of times at the end of the pool.  My question is this..I am trying to do a crash course in total immersion on my own right now, and I am splitting my time between the basic drills and freestyle swimming the distance of the race.  Would I be better off in sticking with the drills and just doing a small amount of actual swimming?  I feel like I am getting smoother in my swim stroke by doing the drills...but I feel the need to get in as many yards as I can.

Since it's your first tri ever, stick to doing the drills and then getting in some regular swimming after.  Those drills will pay off hugely if you stick with them.  The distance will come, just be patient and continue doing the work.  It's okay to pause during your race, just don't stop and give up.  Good luck and remember, savor every moment when you get there.  Smile when you start the swim, smile when you finish and do the same for the other segments.  Enjoy the day because it will be the one you will always remember.  Even if you mess up like running in the wrong direction during the run segment during my first sprint tri, hehe!  =)

Two weeks?  Yikes

I really think that is only time enough to continue getting comfortable just being in the water.  I dont know what the consensus will be among all the other contributors on here, but if I was in your spot I would just focus on swimming multiple times, focusing on being relaxed, and as comfortable as possible...

A lot of pool sprints are so newbie friendly that they let you get through the water any way you can.  I have seen people water walk the 300 meters in a pool swim in my area.  Ticks me off, but the RD lets them do that.

Your race is 150 yards?  You can do it, you will have completed your first tri and have nothing but improvements to look forward to.  Go and have fun with the race, excel where you  can and pla for more swim training before the next race.

Personally I'd keep doing whatever you're doing and not sweat the race at all.  As was already mentioned you can do the swim however you want and take breaks at each end if you need to.  My wife did an indoor tri a few months ago and I think 1/4 of the people walked the swim.

Surprisingly, it's actually perfectly legal, per USAT, to use the bottom - even in an OWS. Check out the Rules Clinic video on the main page... they cover it in there.
