I've reviewed and would like to update my HR numbers for my profile, but I’m somewhat confused by the differing ‘zones’ used with the site here.  From the site, the levels starting with 3 are:

  • 3–Intensive Endurance
  • 4-Sub-Threshold
  • 5a-Super Threshold
  • 5b-Anaerobic Endurance
  • 5c–Power

So my question is, which of these indicates threshold?  And what's the logic behind the "sub"and "super" labels?

Sub and super mean below and above your threshold. Your threshold is zone 4.9-5.1. Anything Z5 and above is above your threshold and anything Z4.9 and below is sub-threshold. Remember that threshold means the heart rate you can maintain for the 20 minute test not for 1 second. Therefore, for a period of time less than 20 minutes it is likely that you can be above or (super-threshold).

It looks complicated at first but having experimented and talked to some people - I wouldn't look too much into the sub categories.

Instead of zone 1, 2, 3, 4, 5a, 5b, 5c...think...

Zone 1

Zone 2

Zone 3

Zone 4

Zone 5

Lump them together. Friel/Coggan/Hunter zones (or levels) probably overcomplicated then it should be.

As long as your in the ballpark, it's all good.
