So our stove is only about 3-4 years old. The electronics panel has apparently gone on the fritz (darn thing just starts beeping and won't stop unless unplugged). Looked online and the part is almost $200 (paid about $1,000 for the stove) so the question is to I replace or repair the stove

Repair - it's not that old, but repair with service call (maybe more than one if they don't have the part) could run me some serious chane. There is no guarantee that something else won't go shortly

Replace - it would be new, I would know it would work

COJ - What say you?

I'm going to go with "repair". There is no guarantee that your new stove will last any longer than your repaired stove and you'll be doing the environment a favor to boot!

What brand and model is your stove. I need to replace mine and would like to steer away from your model.

Good luck with yours.

Sounds like this stove is pretty new so how do you know a new one wouldn't have the same thing happen in a couple of years after the warranty is done?

I say fix it if it still fits the decor of your kitchen.

My first thought was repair, but I thought you meant buy the part and replace it yourself. Not sure about paying the markup on the part plus a service call. I'd get a couple estimates and then reassess.

You can probably replace the defective panel yourself but...it's possible that there is a fundamental design flaw that means you'll be replacing that panel every 3-4 years (and that may be true with almost ANY new stove...).  When you call the repairman, you can describe the symptoms and see if they'll bring the part with them on the first service call, or only charge you one service call even if they have to come back with the repair piece.

Definitely repair.

Chances are that it is either just a factory defect in the board, or there was a design flaw in it. In either case, after 3-4 years of the product being out, the manufacturer has probably run into a fair number of such replacements and there is a strong chance that the replacement parts won't suffer from the same malady.

I also echo the sentiment that you have no guarantee at all that another new stove won't also have problems - like your current new stove

I'd repair it.  I've replaced the electronics module in our stove and it only takes a few minutes.

I agree that a new stove may have just as many (or more) electronic parts that could break. I hadn't considered checking for recalls (I didn't get any notices but that's no guarantee). Love you COJ

repair.

I had an issue with the cooktop of my stove (smooth top) and wound up calling frigidaire. I simply told them what was going on and they decided they'd meet me half way on the cost.

The damage was completely uncalled for, accidental, and out of warranty. It just took a nice polite phone call talking with the customer service and they were willing to cover half the cost. Who knows, maybe your company will do the same.

Still, it's probably cheaper for a repair.

Agreed. Many manufacturers want their reputation in tact so they will either cover it if it were a defect from the factory or help with the repair by providing the part for free and having you pay the tech his labor cost to install it.

X2. I changed the front control panel of our range about three years ago, just a few screws and electrical connectors that slid off/on. Part cost ~$150, my labor is cheap.

X3, I have done it a couple times in rental properties, it is usually a simple swap out, but unplug the unit first.

I'd repair.  Same thing happened on a newer dishwasher.  Control panel was about $100 and took 5 minutes to plug in.  We debated replace or repair and I'm still happy with the decision.

I dunno. I had a board which controlled the interval wipers on a car which malfunctioned. I cheaped out on the labor, installed it myself (visibly correctly), yet the new board blew the first time I turned the wipers on. So I ended up paying the labor once and the parts twice. mechanic said I did everything right. Perhaps I should have pulled the battery off akin to unplugging the stove.

I pay ~$75 for labor when my ice maker freaks out on me. Not bad for in-home service.

I would repair and would really try to replace it myself. Check blogs, YouTube, etc. I am betting it is not that hard.

If you are all handy I would say buy the part yourself and try to repair it.

Chances are if you bring a service guy out it will cost you around $400 to $500 I am guessing.

Arghh, my oven had an issue about a year ago. The button to turn it off stopped working. Stupid electronic part that doesn't need to be electronic. Initially I kept using it and would just flip the breaker to turn it off until I could get it repaired. Now I can almost turn it off 100% of the time by pressing on the exact millimeter of the button which kinds of moves around. It's a pain that this switch is electronic. It just seems like more to go wrong... similar to the broken seat adjustment switch in the car.

If it comes to the point where I can't turn the oven off any longer, I'll look into fixing the switch. I hate discarding perfectly good items.

I didn't really want to replace, but I also didn't want to spend hundreds on a repair that wouldn't last. Good news is that the repair man came Friday, plugged the stove back in and a) couldn't duplicate the problem and b) still no error code. I thanked him for his time and sent him on his way. He offered to order a new electronics panel - I said no thank you.

Did I mention the next day I discovered our grill was dead (pipes split) bought a new grill (natural gas) and neighbor will be installing gas line this week (he works for the gas company, don't worry). Bought a "better" grill and the "right" cover so I have to stop replacing that every few years I hope
