Subject: 50K 14 weeks after IM?

Okay all you Ultra peeps, I come seeking your expert opinions & advice

I am training for IMLP on July 22nd (my 4th IM).  I'd really like to do my first Ultra (Stone Steps 50K) 14 weeks later on October 28th.

Anyone have any experience running an Ultra that soon after an IM?  Any suggestions on what type of plan to follow?

I've been reading "Relentless Forward Progress" by Bryon Powell and the plans in his book are 24 weeks long, so stepping in on week 10 worries me a bit.  Any suggestions?

For the record, I've done 8 stand alone marathons (including 2 in 2 days), finished 2 (hopefully 3 by then!) IM's, multiple HM's & HIM's and several trail races (longest one being 10 miles).  I also finished a marathon 7 weeks after IMLOU last year.  I currently do some trail running and have access to the Stone Steps course for training purposes.  I am slow but steady and looking to build to a 50 miler next year for my 40th B-day (June).

I appreciate any help/suggestions you can give me!!  Thanks in advance

No problem.  50k isn't much different than a marathon in my opinion.  Train like you would train for a marathon and you'll be fine.

I second this.

With the base that you have for the IM you will breeze through this 50k.  After looking at that course map I think I would just worry about getting dizzy!  haha

i did a 50 miler (road) last year 6 weeks after ironman wisconsin.  you can do a 50k easily, especially with your history.  just get in some trail running and you will be fine!

Thanks for the responses guys!  Yes, it is definitely a "loop(y)" course ~ hopefully it won't be too bad.  I'm a little worried about those "steps" though!

Wow ~ 50 miles 6 weeks post IM!  Impressive!  I thought my marathon 7 weeks post IM was tough.  What do you think about the long runs?  Get back up to 20-22 ish?  Longer?

my taper time for the ironman was more of a "transition" from doing all the tri stuff to longer slower miles.  took a few days off after the ironman and then just started running again. was able to do a 20+ miler the weekend after and then put in multiple 100+ mile weeks.  Paid off as i ended up 10th overall and only 9 mins slower than the previous year when all i did was train for the 50 miler.
