I love Sheila dearly. She's a great person, competitor, athlete and coach.

I jut got a copy of her new book, "Swim Speed Secrets for Swimmers and Triathletes".

Given the number of threads we see about swim anxiety, swim training difficulty and general swim concerns this book is a worthwhile read. One of the things I like about the book, and Sheila, is she knows how to cut to the chase.

On page 54 there is a one paragraph explanation of high elbows. It's a succint reference on elbows and indicative of the book.

Today not a lot of people want to sit down and read a book cover-to-cover on anything, so Sheila's book is packed with reference photos and an effusive index to look up topics you want info on now. You can use it as a flip-reference to diagnose your stroke, your training and everything you need to know on triathlon swimming.

Have a look at this out at your bookstore or browse it on Amazon.com or your other favorite bookseller. This is a nice, succinct reference that answers questions we so commonly see.

Ditto everything Tom said.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I don't think much of swim books, but this one changed my life, and it has detailed online stuff as well (videos and such). It is as useful and applicable for newbies as well as highly competitive swimmers.

Sheila is arguably history's greatest athlete. She got that way not only by working harder than everybody else and being willing to sacrifice more, but also by breaking every sport she did (especially swimming, but all of them) down and analyzing them. She went to her first Olympics at age 28, which is relatively very late, and went on to three more!

She has put the same painstaking care into now giving the fruits of her hard work to others. How do they learn? What helps them the most? How can I put it most clearly? What's most motivational? The result is that she is that rare creature who not only is a top athlete, but now a top coach and above all ... a top human being. Not many are so kind and generous. She does extensive work with charities.

Honestly ... forget all the other swim books, videos, systems, coaches, etc. Buy this book FIRST ... read it ... twice ... do it ... and see what happens.

I had the privilege of meeting her recently when she spoke at a company event.  What a great individual and athlete!  She was classy and very down to earth.

OK - I BIT!  I'm probably not the only one who wants to increase their swim speed.  Granted, I am improving, having recently swum successive sub 2:00 (1:54) 100s, but I would love to sustain that pace (or faster) over the 1500m swim.  This is from someone who could barely dog paddle two years ago!

I'm ready for any secrets that can help shave off time!

I met Sheila at an event prior to my first triathlon.  I have a poster signed by her framed which is what I hang all my medals.  I found her inspirational and so warm and friendly.  I credit her with being one of the things people that got me through a difficult time in my life as the day after she spoke I was laid off from my job.  She came back just over a month later to the event and recognized me from the earlier talk and cheered me in to the finish.

You know what happens to people who lie about not being happy just in order to get melon presses, right?

The book's going to keep you busy for long enough that by the time you think about melon-press manipulation, you'll have become a truly good swimmer and can't lie about it.

I got the first-run printing from Sheila's own sticky little paws (she is TINY ... smallest Olympic swimming champion ever!) when it still had a different title and publisher.

I seriously spend so much time with this book that it lives on my bed.

^^^^ You know it's not a real Tom thread without a picture of a cat ...

I just want to add two things:

Sheila is ALSO a world-champion triathlete, so she brings the very best of "train like a swimmer" with top instruction of how to swim for TRIATHLON.

She was the one who took the picture that's my avatar!

I would say because of the detail in the diagrams and photographs, it's not a e-format friendly book.

I was with you until you said "a truly good swimmer".  I am not a lousy swimmer but to set the expectation that it will transform me into a "truly good swimmer" is setting the bar high.  Either way, book ordered, thanks for the tip, and we shall hope.  I will count on the melon press guarentee as a back up (I am assuming virtual due to distance issues).

BLESS YOU ... never mind Tom and I; go see what other triathlon and swimming world champions and their coaches are saying about this book.

Again--my mom (NOT A SWIMMER OR TRIATHLETE ... actually she's 78 and has Alzheimer's) could understand this book. That's how clear it is.

And yet anyone, from completely new swim learner to Olympic athlete--could benefit from this book.

I bit. I'm not extremely interested in being much faster (heresy, I know!!! but I can get a lot faster running first!) but her writing was really clear and almost sassy, which I dig. Thanks for the tip. If I pick something up, AWESOME. If not, I put some money in a good writer's pocket, which is fine with me.

I have the previous issue of this book. I was lucky enough to take one of her swim clinics last year. Best training $ ever. Team in Training sponsored the event so for $60 we were treated to a few hours with Sheila in the pool/on the deck, her book, and a set of resistance paddles...sweet deal! It was a great experience and I came away with a lot more confidence in my stroke. She really simplifies what is important so you can focus in training. Highly recommended!

Maybe.  But with the new iPad and it's Retina Display, the photos would be amazing.  I really wish the book was available right now digitally.  I'd throw it on my iPad in a minute.
