so my PT has apparently bit the dust (so says the bike shop) should I attempt to repair (almost 4 (5?) years old) or consider saving up for a Garmin Vector? Any thoughts/suggstions appreciated.
They keep pushing back the launch date for the Vector; now they are saying it won't be available this summer. So wouldn't count on it. Cheapest option might be to fix your powertap. Also look into quarq; a crank based system which is way cheaper then SRM.
I waited over a year for the Vector to come out before I got a Powertap. Wish I would have gotten it sooner. The Vector is vaporware at this point. You could be waiting forever for it.
I gave up on the Garmin and went with a Quarq. After over six months later Garmin said they're postponing putting out the Vector indefinitely.

Garmin have announced another delay to their keenly anticipated Vector pedal-based power meter. After saying earlier this year that the release date would be in summer 2012, it's now been pushed back indefinitely.
I'd just repair it. Cycleops customer service is the best. I just talked with them yesterday on getting my joule replaced after being caught in a downpour. Even though I am at fault for the issues that I am now having with the PT, they replaced it no questions asked.
