Subject: Racing strategy for Fink Plan Olympic Race

So I have my Olympic distance race this weekend that the Fink plan calls for.  My question is how should I approach this race?  Should I go with my IM race pacing and stay Zone 2 for the race or should I push it and race it hard.  Not sure what his definition of a "race rehearsal" is? Is it more for nutrition, clothing, equipment etc..?

Any thought, suggestions or past experience witht he plan would be much appreciated.

Well by rehearsal I am sure the plan means going through the motions, per say, to understand where your strengths and weaknesses are and identify where you need work.

For me, all races are raced to win. Give yourself an off day Monday and then fall back into training from there. I would look for some smaller goals (pace) within the race to target. For example, I just completed a sprint a few weeks back at the end of a recovery week - that I choose to use as a taper instead since this was in the middle of training for an Olympic still months away. I choose to target two items - avg bike speed & run pace. I knew what I had been doing in training, in respect to paces, so I wanted to gauge what the equated to in racing conditions (i.e.after a race swim).

My thoughts, others may disagree. Herm Edwards once said, "You play to win the game." I concur.

Yeah, he doesn't really explain that one.  I say race it because pacing for a Oly is nothing like pacing for a half/full (and no real recovery penality).  Zone 2 for an olympic distance is better practiced on a day at home (IMHO).  At this point you are well into the speed work he prescribes so I assume this is just one big speed workout.

I am doing the Fink plan for IM Lake Placid.  I looked at the olympic (and later 1/2 IM) race as a RACE!  The week leading up to the races are "easy" and the week following each race is a recovery week of sorts with no interval 4 work, so CRUSH IT!!!!!!!!

Great -thanks for the help - I think I am gonna race it - especially due to the fact that when I last checked there was only 5 people in the 35-39 AG so I won't have a better chance then this to place in my AG haha
