Subject: A workout two days after a race?
I live in Oregon and a bunch of us just ran a half marathon on trails. Yesterday (two days after the race) most of the people whom I train with did a hard workout (6x1000m on trails) with one minute recovery. I only did one 1000m repeat myself (with baby and stroller, lol). My question is this: what benefits do you get from doing a hard workout two days after a race? Shouldn't you let your body recover?

It depends.

A 'race' is just another hard workout.  For some, they may be content to 'train through' a race.  This can be leading up and/or following the race.  Eventually, they need enough recovery to absorb the work they do.  But just because one did a race does not necessarily mean that some extra recovery needs to be done.  Really, this is all very individual as it depends on relative intensity and level of fitness.  If you are ready to do a hard workout two days later, go ahead and do it.  It may mean you didn't push the race as hard as you could have.  Or it may just mean that the workload of that race was not that high relative to your fitness level.  But if the race was particularly hard for you, then it probably makes sense to take it a little easier and recover more.

I'm pretty sure everyone ran the race as a race and not as a workout. These are really good runners (one guy ran 1:18 and the race was at 3500 ft altitude with hills. Some said it's 10 min slow compared to a flat course at sea level.) So this guy ran a 1:08 race effort and then does 6x1000m at full speed...

You should listen to your body and give it the recovery time it needs, but if you're well adapted to running/racing that distance, then there's little reason to not return to your normal workout routine after a couple of days.

Sounds like these guys are just well conditioned athletes.

x2. It sounds like the other guys were at a fitness level that a hard trail HM is not a big deal for them.

A 'race' is just another hard workout.

boom.

If your race/workout was too hard and you need another day, take it. However, don't take an entire week or so off, you'll lose those cardio gains.

I can shake off a 5k or sprint tri in a day or 2 with light workouts, a HIM a little longer, my 1 Marathon took 2 weeks to really run well again, and a full month to feel "right". Like others have said "it depends"

All I know is that I'm decent shape and my legs felt like crap two days after the race and if I did a hard workout I would end up injured or sore for a week straight.

Then listen to your body and don't worry about it. If these guys are running that fast they are great athletes and their bodies probably recover faster as well

I think, as others have said, it's dependent upon the athlete. I've built up enough of a base that I'm able to train pretty soon after a race. I did a half marathon a few weeks ago, then a 60+ mile ride the next day. The ride wasn't at the usual power level for that ride, but I felt ok.

When I did a half marathon a few years ago on very little training, I was sore for over a week, after the recent HM I was fine the next day due to routine 12+ hour weeks of training. For those runners putting in 80+ mile weeks (I'd imagine someone in sub 1:10 shape would be at this mileage), returning to speed work after a day or two is probably quite routine.
