Hi guys! Once upon a time I used to ride a bicycle. A dozen years ago I rode at least one century in every month that didn't have snow on the roads. Now I'm about 60lbs overweight and sadly out of shape. Have committed myself to the couch to sprint program in addition to riding to work each day. Have dropped ten pounds in the past three weeks and feel like I'm slowly getting my legs back. Am hoping to do a couple of duathalons next summer but for now just looking forward to seeing my feet again.

Hey old guy! We should open a new forum for the over the hill athletes. I've been doing tris on and off for quite a while. My swim is slow, my bike super fast, and my run so so. With all this I've learn a little about these activities; so here it goes.
Safety first, you know, like helmet, reflectant (if training in the dark) etc. The other safety: You mention about the weight gain. Does you doc says the tris are ok? Also, a gung ho attitude is not so good. Why? Because with a sedentary life everything in your systems got weak. An increase of 10% in duration, effort or distance per week is the norm. Anything more will put you out of the game. Do I sound judgemental? Maybe, but I have to be honest. Specially when I talk to people I respect.

Good attitude, Yes!
Gung ho attitude, no. :-)

Thanks for the replies. I appreciate your advice and concerns but let me reassure you that I'm not pushing myself too hard. If you knew my run/cycle times and distances you would believe. I am following the couch to sprint program and feel that I can handle 30 minutes of activity three times per week. The cycling is mostly my commute to work supplemented with very short rides on the road bike. No danger of a cardiac event there either. I'm giving myself a full year to get to the point where age group events can be considered. But, I have to admit, the change has set me free.

Plenty of us "old guys" here.  I love your handle (relic) by the way, wish I'd thought of it!  Welcome to the "wrinkled skin division" and good luck with your training and racing.  It does get to be pretty addictive.
