I'm Asthmatic, I run and a few years ago I did a half marathon although I'm a bit older know.

A triathlon is intense and competitive. Is it worth me trying?

I have recently been struggling with asthmatic symptoms and beginning to take proventol prior to all of my cycling (usually when the symptoms show up because of the intensity I ride) and races.  I would say absolutely it is worth it!

It you enjoy a competitive sport than give triathlon a shot.  There is no reason you can't work around asthma and this sport.  I am sure there will be many, others who have asthma comment later that will tell you the same.

Good luck!

I've had asthma for 25 years, and I absolutely think it's doable as long as your asthma symptoms are controlled.  For me, that means seeing my pulmonologist on a regular basis.  I also have allergies and hayfever, which cause my asthma to flare up, so I have to control those as well.  I take Advair 2 x per day, and I carry a rescue inhaler with me when I run.

Are you on any preventative meds like Advair?

I was diagnosed with excercise and allergy induced asthma about 3 years ago and it hasn't stopped me from doing triathlons. In fact, my pulmolnologist strongly recommends excercise. When I start feeling the symptoms I use my inhaler + allergy meds. And, if necessary, I bring the inhaler along.

My running and swimming coaches are aware and adapt my workouts accordingly in the winter or on days the pollen counts are really high.

Believe me, it's worth it. I came in second in my last triathlon (OK, not a big playing field - 11 women - but I was 2nd) !!

I haven't actually ever been to see a pulmonologist... i'm on ventolyn the infamous blue inhaler.

I'm determined to do one, completing it would be my goal!

And a triathalon is no different than any other race... it is only as intense and competitive as you want to make it. We all try to perform up to our abilities and push what is possible for us to do... what that is for you is what it is for you. No reason what so ever not to go out and try to perform to your abilities and see how far you can push your self. Asthma, weight, joint problems, disabilities... does not matter. We are all just trying to do what we can with what we have.

Absolutely YES, it worth it. Make sure you see a good doctor that understands asthma, but also athletes... and make sureyouhave the asthma under control.

I've been racing bikes, running, duathlons, triathlons, played hockey and soccer, all with asthma.

Absolutely worth it! Like the others I have asthma since I was a child.  The key is getting it under control through a qualified doctor.  I know the more I run and bike the better my asthma.

See a pulmonologist, makes sure it is under control and have fun!

With the right medication asthma should not keep you from trying. If you've had asthma attacks that required emergency hospitalisation, then you should talk to your doctor.

totally do it. I have mild to moderate reactive airways. When in training I am on symbicort and pre exercise albuterol. when I get sick I add pulmicort in.

just make sure you are optimized in your treatment and you will be fine

As an asthmatic, I agree with everyone above.  Find the right combination of meds and take them as prescribed.  Know your triggers and train accordingly--ie  if yoiu have bad allergies the pollen counts are highest early mornings so you may need to train later in the evening.  Keep your rescue inhaler available at all times.  If you train with friends let them know where it is too.  I have been on bike rides where I could not stop coughing and my friend had to dig through my jersey pockets to get to the inhaler.  Now I tell her where it is in the event I can't stop coughing to reach back into the pocket.....better yet, I keep it in the bento on my top tube with a few gels.

Thank you everyone this is such a great response, luckily my asthma is very mild and most of the time I can go for a run and nothing happens.

I am going to see my doctor to see what I can do to make sure that my Asthma doesn't become a problem when I start to train properly for a triathlon.

Again thank you all for your great responses.

I was born with severe asthma. I have never known what it feels like to breath 'normally.' I take several meds in high doses. Unmedicated I cannot go up a flight of stairs without sounding like I have congestive heart failure......

That said....I am a 2x HIM and 3X Ironman. In 2011 I placed 15th AG at IMSG, a notoriously tough course.

There is nothing stopping you except you.

Yup, absolutely worth it!  I've beeen asthmatic since I was a teenager (a very very long time ago) and I've found that the training has really helped reduce the symptoms of my asthma, so I no longer have to take those nasty steroids any more (I danced around the doctors office with happiness that day, much to the amusement of the nurses).  My doctors are very much in support of my training and racing, but I do get checked regularly.

I still occasionally need my rescue inhaler, but I always carry it with me on my bike and runs, and during races (you can buy good race belts with holders for inhalers).  It's also taught me what my limits are in terms of pushing my pace with respect to my asthma, but I've been able to do far more than I thought was possible.  That's the beauty of triathlons, you go at your own pace, and it's so much fun.  So yes, it's worth it!

I too have asthma and am training for my first triathlon in September. My asthma is pretty severe, but under control as long as I take my meds. I also deal with exercise induced asthma. So, needless to say I've been hesitant about taking on a triathlon, but I am determined to do it! It's good to hear the responses of so many asthmatics that have made it happen! Thanks for the inspiration!

The woman in this video would certainly tell you "yes".  She comes in at about the 4:15 mark, and her reasons are at the 5:50 mark.

I've dealt with asthma my whole life and it is definitely worth trying. The trick is do you have it under control. Don't let asthma be a small roadblock to enjoying this great sport.

Does anyone keep their inhaler on them the entire time during a triathlon? I have a fear of racing without it on my person at all times.

I haven't had an attack in IM (only in sprints) but do keep it with me at all times.  I keep it at T1, then in my bike jersey (IM), pocket (HIM to sprint) and then in hand for the run.  I've used it on training runs and rides and a couple times training swims.  Just 2nd nature to have it with me.
