Subject: My first century (+) ride plus major gel malfunction
I'm sure its been done a lot by others on the site, but today I bagged my first century ride (101.2 miles at the end of the driveway). When my computer got to 99.7 miles I kept looking at it as often as I could because I didn't want to miss it hit triple digits. A big grin came over my face at 100.0 and I looked at my watch which read 5:41:00. Not a fast time but today was supposed to be mostly z1 with some z2 mixed in. Couldn't savor it long because I had to jog the bike to the house and transition to do a short 20 minute brick run.

Highlight of the day was a chocolate Power gel malfunction at about 80 miles. Tore off the top with my teeth and started squeezing the pack. Nothing would come out so I kept squeezing harder until the darn thing burst on the bottom. Had to stop because my right hand and brake hood were covered with chocolate gel. Luckily in our neck of the woods there aren't many cars on the roads and no one was around (except a bunch of dairy cows) to see me licking the gel off of my brake hoods.

Now that 112 miles of IM WI in Sept. doesn't seem so intimidating.

Wow! Congrats on a great milestone! Almost 6 hours on the bike - that is so impressive

I went to your log for more details (food \ hydration \ mood \ etc) - nothing! How was it? I wanna ride like that... //jealous//

Great job.

Nice job on the century. I came close myself today at about 96. I was more concerned about the 75 minute run I had to do than busting triple digits.

And the whole brake hood thing.....just ew.

Thanks. Not a paying BT member, so.... no logs....2 bottles water, 2 bottles energy drink, 1 Powerbar, 3 Power Gels, well....maybe 2.25 gels...

I was actually wearing a vest, leg warmers, arm warmers and gloves the first 2.5 hours....in JUNE!!! 46 degrees and windy when I started. I never did take off the arm warmers or vest. Hopefully it will be warmer for those in the Manitou Tri tomorrow.

Logs are available for us cheapskates, too.

In other words, free logging! Give it a shot, I do.

(I swear Ron, I'm gonna buy a bronze membership one day, just as soon as I run out of tri things to buy . . . oh, wait . . . I'm never going to run out of tri things to buy . . . )

the only thing you have to pay for on BT is to import training plans, access to certain forum threads, certain articles, etc.  Basic access - i.e. logs and forums, are all free!  everyone gets nifty graphs and stuff too, to track progress.

good luck with your training!

There is so much available for free here its amazing. They do a great job. I am so impressed by the service and site that I pay for a membership just to give them money. Its really not much a month.

Back to your original post: Congrats on the century! Thats awesome. You'll hear people say, "I don't like to drive my car that far!" To which you'll respond, "I don't either."

This same gel incident happend to a BTer some months ago. The general response was: at least it wasn't vanilla...

Congratulations on your first century!  I'd love to be able to ride that long..one day I'll be able to do it.  I've done the same thing with gel.  It's such a mess!

LOL!! The mental image of a biker liking brake hoods is fantastic. I don't know what I would think if I saw someone liking their handlebars... Now I'll know.

Hey, I had exactly the same two weeks ago with a chocolat power gel. mine bust on the side and went all over my hand, glove and leg !
Today I had a cycling race, and again a chocolat power gel didn't open. But didn't get dirty this time. I realised after puting a little pressure that the same problem had occured, so gave the top and extra bite and it opened.
Must be a falty batch...

Woah - I am super jealous.  Both of your great long ride and 46 degree temps.   Yesterday when I got finished my bike from hell its was 100 degrees.  Egads.

 Nice job!

WOW! Great job! Very impressive indeed!

Oh... have you tried the Clif Shot Blocks? So much easier to handle while riding. You can put them in a sandwhich bag and reach for them without a mess.
