Subject: Garmin 910XT - Just used for the 1st time

To make a long story short, I lost my 310XT that I bought in November 2011.  Wife got mad at me for borrowing her 305 again and made me buy my own new heart rate monitor.   Guys at my local running shop that sold me the 310XT felt bad for me and gave me a 10% discount so instead of another 310XT I bought a 910XT.

Swam in a lap pool this morning with it.  Not having to count laps is awesome!

Anyone else have this and any comments, good or bad?

It has been a great tool for me so far.  I especially like the tracking in OWS.  Instant pacing for running has been useless but overall distance and pace for an interval seem very accurate.

I ignore instant pace and just set average pace for lap and overall.

The swim feature is awesome (both pool and OWS).

I've had my 910xt for 2 weeks since upgrading from my trusty 305.  I'm still learning the features and tweaking the settings.  I agree, the OWS accuracy is sweet, as are all the customizable display options.  Surprisingly, my favorite outcome from the purchase is not having to stand at the end of my driveway staring at my wrist like a goon because I forgot to turn it on before starting my workout.

It just seems such a shame for a watch with so much potential to be absolutely useless at determining instant run pace when Garmin got it to work on the 405.  Makes for some crazy max/min pace marks.  I wonder why that is. :/

I gotta agree with you. Whatever secret sauce the Garmin had in previous iterations, it's gone in the 910xt. I've run almost 1000 miles now with my 910xt, and the instant pace is TERRIBLE. Unless it's a wide-open clear blue sky, it's horrendously off. The strangest thing is that it'll be off for the entire time, yet on the download, the data will be correct, which is very annoying.

I ran the Oly leg of a race a few months ago, and it read the entire first 3 miles at 10-11min/mile when I knew I was about 7min/mile. Yes, there was some tree canopy cover, but that's way too far off. I checked my watch religiously to await the 'correction' but it never really came. Yet on the download, my pace was fixed - 6:55/mile. WTF.

I wouldn't feel as bad about it except that my good ol 305 (had two of them, actually) was fantastic at instant pace. Easily 4-5x better than the 910xt, which makes me think it's an algorithm issue vs a inferior GPS antenna. My 305 could mosty give accurate run speed even in dense tree cover, whereas the 910 goes haywire for me.
