Competed in a great race with fellow BTer Rollingbones yesterday! Harriman, NY Tri..Challenging race.

After the race my wife tells me that the first guy out of the water during my heat was swimming with one arm?!?! (he had two arms, but chose to swim with just one). I'm thinking, thanks alot hun...I was swimming my little ole heart out with two arms and the first guy out of the water in my heat was using just one arm...oof...I am guessing that he probably swam the first 400 with one arm and the second 400 with the other arm. Has anyone ever seen (or done) such a thing. My wife said she could tell that his strokes were really powerful...I am thinking that maybe it was an optical illusion...But she had a friend there to confirm...How could he go so fast???

I'm thinking you might want to validate those "supposed" fast marathon times your wife says she posts

Yea, I asked her again, and she started to waiver. Still sticks by it though, says it really looked like it and a friend of ours was looking as well, and he "seemd" to be swimming with one arm. I think they were sleep deprived from camping in the wind for two days straight.

Sure it possible.  We have a training drill we do that is swimming one lap with only one arm.  It's a slow drill though.  Maybe they had a sore arm or shoulder and could only use one arm.  Was there a photographer at the race?  If so look up some pictures to verify.

It might make sense, if he was injuried and couldn't use an arm. There would be no point in using your left arm for awhile and then just using your right arm for awhile. Would you bike this way? He was injuried and couldn't use it or somebody is pulling your leg, I mean arm.

Is it possible he was doing some sort of side-stroke? That might look like one-armed swimming from a distance.

Funny you bring this up. I've been doing some 1 arm'ed drills. Actually, my current warm-up is 4x100 of 25 right only, 25 left only, 25 catch-up, 25 swim. I typically complete the 100 right at 2:00 and my 25 catch-up is the slow leg.

I think the first 50 is quite faster than the last 50 but I've never looked. Maybe one day, I'll swim a few 100s only 1 arm to see how well I do.

My first thought is that if he truley was swimming with one arm - then he probably had some physical limitations that was peventing him from swimming with two arms. I would almost say it was something perminent rather than temporary like an injury - only because of your indication that he was so fast....that sounds like he has been swimming like that for awhile. It would be interesting to know for sure.

Optical illusion or a little something extra in her coffee that morning......

I'm guessing an optical illusion

At the Wildflower HIM this year, there was a woman who swam the relay leg one armed... because she only had one arm.  She ROCKED!!  May not have been fast, but she sure put things in perspective.  Hard to watch someone like that run into T1 and not get veklempt

Last tri I did there was a lady with only one arm.  She obviously did pretty good on the swim because she passed me on the bike pretty early on the course, and the women started after my wave.

It could be that the guy was breathing only on one side and the opposite side never got much out of the water to be seen.

There was a lady in the last tri I went to spectate at who only had one arm.  Her one arm was amputated right at the shoulder.  She finished the swim (not fast, but not last either).  She rode a mountain bike with only one arm and ran.  I was amazed!

Thanks All...I am leaning toward the optical illusion idea. I could see where if the person was breathing only on one side with the oposite arm not coming out of the water too far would appear as though the person was swiming with one arm...My wife even admitted that it could have been an optical illusion...
