I am doing the Waterman's Half next month.  Has anyone done this race?  I'm trying to get a feel for what to expect. Thanks for any feedback.

Mike

I will be doing the sprint. I was supposed to do the Smallwood race but it was cancelled due to heat. Anyway, I rode the sprint course a few times one day and it's mostly rolling hills with a few steeper climbs, but I was able to handle it all in the big chain ring. I don't know what else the longer races add. I didn't preview the sprint run. The lake looked fairly nice.

I'm doing it and it will be my first time for this race.  I've been planning to ride the bike course since I registered... haven't done that yet.  If I do, I'll report back.

I did the Oly swim for Smallwood on a relay team (same swim area). It's not too bad, but has a lot of grass type stuff growing in the water. Some of it's fairly close to the surface, so expect to fight it a bit. Good luck!

Last year's race was my first and only HIM (so far).  Yes, the green monster (river grass) will attack you but it really didn't bother me.  In fact I found the water to be super clean and refreshing.  Water temp was pretty cool (65?) but w/ a wetsuit it wasn't a factor.  The bike was pretty rolling but there were some shorter climbs that weren't too bad.  The run is two laps and the only thing I didn't like was some long stretches on a more major road w/ no cover.  It was pretty hot by then last year.  Support was very good.  Setup always puts on a great race.  We stayed in a cabin for two nights.  Very nice time overall.  Enjoy.

I would certainly get a wetsuit.  I don't think it would be dangerous or anything to do the swim w/o.  However, you will be cold and wetsuits make most people faster in the water.  I got a super deal from XTerra on my wetsuit.  I like it but there are tons of brands and good deals to be found.

You can rent them online or from a local store for about $35 for a week (which gives you plenty of time to rinse it and let it dry b/f returning).

I'm planning to ride the bike course on Saturday the 29th if anyone is interested in joining me.  I'm planning on starting around 8 AM, but am somewhat flexible if anyone wants to join.

If you bike the course next Saturday, could you post a .gpx or .fit file?  I'm racing and I will not be able to get down there ahead of time.  It would be nice to see the elevation changes before I actually have to ride them.

Thanks!

Wow, what a day on Saturday at the Half!  I don't know about anyone else, but it took me until few miles into the run before my feet weren't numb any longer.   Challenging conditions for sure.

Does anyone know what the elevation gain or elevation change is for the bike course?

Thanks and congrats to all finishers.

I gave up on this race before it even started.  By the time I walked down the solid blocks of ice dock and waited for the start I couldn't feel my feet and was shaking uncontrollably.  I preceeded to have my worst HIM yet, by over 35 minutes... but hey I finished!

Pretty much the same for me.  I've only done 2 HIMs, but this one was 30 minutes slower for me.  I realized it might be cool for a mid October race, but I was not fully prepared for the conditions that day.

I also had the bright idea to camp the night before. Probably won't do that again.
