Subject: Beginner Triathalete at 45 ;)

I was a college athlete and somewhere along the line I went against everything I believed and starting smoking ;( I've recently quit and replaced that nasty habit with sprint triathalon training and I'm obssessed. I'm a single mom of a 5 yr old with a full time job so I'm having to get very creative.

I began training mid July and at that point I had not swam more than 50 yards without stopping, had not been able to run more than 2 minutes without stopping and could ride about 10 miles on my mountain bike.

Sept 16 was my 45th birthday and I complete my very own challenge - a Sprint Tri 1/2 mile swim, 12 mile mountain bike ride and 3.1 mile run in 1:47 min. I am hooked and know encouraged and motivated to train, train, train to be able to enter some 'real' triathalons in the spring.

I am excited to find this forum of people!!!!!

Welcome to BT and congrats on quitting smoking!

Finding time to train is a challenge for many of us.  We have families, jobs and other commitments.  But we love triathlon so we find a way to make it work.  Being a single mom it will be especially challenging for you. I'm glad you've made the commitment, though. Having a healthy mommy will be great for your 5 yr old.

As for a "real" triathlon, many people here are quite happy training for and doing only sprints.  It is what fits their schedule and they feel no need to do longer distances. It's all in what your goals are for you.

Welcome to a great support system. BTers are the BEST!

A real triathlon is any distance of the combination of the three disciplines - you are already a triathlete!!!!

Thanks! Sorry, by 'real' I meant entering a competition I tested myself this month to determine IF I could do it and what I needed to work on. I am hooked!!! Sprints will be my thing for sure, the Olympic might be on the bucket list but nothing more

That is VERY cool Dental Mom!  I'm 43 and competing in my first sprint tri on 10/6.  It makes me feel really good to see a bunch of the over 40 crowd in here.
