Subject: What's your minimum to maximum volume?

Another thread got me wondering what other runners and triathletes think about average training volume for each specific distance.  What is your volume range in hours per week of s/b/r training volume for each distance?

How about for half mary and for full mary?

I'm thinking more in terms of just the s/b/r portion, not the cross-training if you do any.

For me:

Sprint Tri - 5-6 hrs/wek

Oly Tri  - 6-9 hrs/week

HIM - 10-12 hrs/week

Half mary - 3-5 hrs/week

Marathon - 5-8 hrs/week

Very curious to hear about others' training volume!

5-12 (S/B/R only) depending on the week.  Every so often I throw a race into the mix, but don't train based on races.

For me Right now for sprint racing I am doing average around 7&1/2 hrs a week total of that 3 & 1/2 is swim in the pool where I need the most work and 2 is run and 2 is bike, this will probably increase to around 10 hrs + over the winter as I tend to run more as it gets cooler so add an extra run Per week and ride more on the trainer in the winter then during the summer with 4 hrs of  formal spin classes in the winter + rides at home , I have been at about 120/140 miles per month  from may to now that will go to 200 to 265 per month from Nov to March Most of that increase is bike volume for me though.

I don't think I would change much to go from sprint to oly if anything, but would for HIM or IM obviously.

I'm usually in the 10-17 hours a week range regardless of what I'm racing (tris, runs, bike races), or what distance (sprint, oly, HIM, HM, Marathon, 12 mile TTs or 100 mile bike races.  Naturally distribution of hours between s/b/r changes based on what I'm doing though.

I'm usually 10-15, w/ some lower and some higher. I focus mostly on HIM training, but haven't done any this year. The long runs still scare me a little coming back from ACL surgery. I put in some heavy bike weeks of over 10hrs of biking (not a lot for some people).

This reminds me of talking with some 'personal trainers' at an Xsport Fitness I used to go to in Chicago area. They talked me into going through a session with a specialist so I could get a lower monthly rate, so I did. Saved me $5/mo. Anyways, at the end of the session they asked what I'm training for. I said triathlons. They proceeded to ask me how much training I do now for it, I said probably 12-15hrs/week (which I was at the time). So the 'triathlon/marathon' specialist trainer proceeded to ask,"So you're just training for a sprint then right?" The conversation ended there and I just asked for my lower rate and left.

I averaged 15.5 hrs/week for my last HIM over 12 weeks. An honest 15.5, as that's what the Garmin read for the summary. Felt like a lot, but it definitely worked.

Peak weak week was 19.5, lowest week other than taper week was 12.5.

I found it hard to do quality speedwork more than once per week, as it was too fatiguing. Am hoping that I'll feel differently the next go-around.

Looking back on this season, my average training week from April-September has been around 13 hours, peaking at 21, and with a low of around 7 hours. My primary focus was a 70.3 in June and qualifying for the 70.3 World Championships, then training for the World Championships, which took place two weeks ago.

When training for a marathon I'm around 8-9 hours of running/week, but usually throw in a 10k and HM during training, a month or so out from the marathon to gauge fitness levels. I am now six weeks away from the NYC Marathon, and doing a bit of cramming. I ran around 45 mpw over the summer months as a run focus, but will be doing 5 weeks of 8 or so hours of running in hopes of breaking the 3 hr barrier. I plan to do very little biking and swimming over this time frame, which will feel very weird after months of decent volume.

0-15, not counting stretching/weights/PT stuff.

That's my deal for all races (running up to half marathon; all dus...up to "oly" length. No swimming. No tris.). Most of my volume is on the bike. Almost everything I do is zone 2.

I guess around usually 8 - 10 hours a week.  I usually get in an hour a day during the week and 2-3 hours a day on weekends depending on life.  I was training for a HIM, but I decided to wait until spring and just did an Olympic this fall.  I want to be able to do a little more than just finish, maybe mid pack type finish.

I tried to look at my trianing log.  It shows everything in minutes.  I wish it had an option to show hours.  I'm an engineer and still have trouble converting to hours in my head.
