Total Time = 5h 35m 41s
Overall Rank = 57/181
Age Group = 40-44 Male
Age Group Rank = 12/24
Pre-race routine:

Oatmeal and banana at about 3:45a. 90 minute drive to Richmond with wife and kids (they are troopers). Arrived at about 5:30a to race site to pick up packet.
Event warmup:

0.5 mile run about 45 minutes before swim and light stretching.
Swim
  • 32m 1s
  • 1931 meters
  • 01m 40s / 100 meters
Comments:

River swim had a decent current compared to week before. I did not really notice too much whil swimming, only when crossing river. I stayed wide on purpose as a bunch of guys ended up down below buoy.
Transition 1
  • 03m 35s
Comments:

Did not attach shoes to pedals here due to this being a half. Decided to add socks here so knew it wouldn't be super speedy.
Bike
  • 2h 52m 4s
  • 56 miles
  • 19.53 mile/hr
Comments:

I started out great. Did not have Garmin with me, but coul dtell I was rolling along at a nice pace for me. Was hoping to crack a 21 mph average for the course, but at mile 30 I started cramping in the glutes and had to back off the pace a bit. This lasted most of the way back to T2 along with a nice headwind the last 20 miles. All in all not bad, but could be better. not sure where cramps came from. not a big cramper, and took in plenty of fluids and electrolytes on bike. Was sick earlier in the week or coul dhave been from cold weather, but not sure.
What would you do differently?:

Not much different here.Biking is my strong suit. more hills would have been better for me, but loved the course (except for 1 mile section that had been milled to be paved...awful)
Transition 2
  • 00m 52s
Comments:

No quirks here, just worried about cramping at this point. Had already gobbled up all my endurolytes.
What would you do differently?:

Carry pure salt tabs on bike instead of just endurolytes.
Run
  • 2h 07m 10s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

Started right out of T2 cramping. Asked at first 2 aid stations for salt but nothing. Finally at station 3 or 4 got some and cramping subsided in about 15 min. Had water bottle with me which is awesome to keep cool. Didn't start to feel any pain til maybe mile 11 or so. Nonetheless it wasn't a bad run for in terms of feel. It would be nice to break the 2 hr barrier on a 70.3 run, but maybe next time.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around a bit. Got some oranges, bananas, and part of a burger. Headed home to make it to picnic for kids.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Had virus in early part of week which may or may not have contributed to cramping.
