I like Dominos glueten free pizza but most of the time we make our own at home.  Get some flatbread/artisan crust and add things like Feta or goat cheese, spinach, mushrooms, onions, tomatoes and you have a seriously healthy pizza that tastes great!

Interesting pizza makes some of you feel bad. In the last year or so of training I have noticed one food that consistently results in better performance the next morning, PIZZA!!! I am serious, every time I eat pizza the next morning I feel like I could just keep running/biking/swimming forever. My best training times consistently come the morning after eating pizza. I have every intention of gorging myself on pizza this friday before running a sprint saturday morning. I get chicken, mushroom, and basil pizza (that and a guinness). I don't get anything like extra cheese or pepperoni cause I don't want a bunch of grease. I don't know if it's all the carbs or the extra sodium or what.

Best part is, it's pretty much my favorite food. I could eat pizza 3-4 times a week if the wifey would let me.

I agree.  Some of my best workouts have been the morning after pizza. Just don't over do it.

 

yeah, I didn't figure this out by testing a bunch of different foods or anything. I just stumbled upon it by noticing I had really good workouts some days and not others and finally realized the common denominator to my good workouts were eating pizza the night before. I remember sitting there eating pizza going man I'm gonna feel like crap tomorrow morning and then feeling great. Then, I noticed this was a pattern of feeling great the next morning on my runs. I am still not sure which foods result in poor workouts the next morning but I am sure with another year or two in this sport I will identify a few things that don't agree with me. probably salad which my wife considers a meal. I refuse to accept salad as anything but a appetizer/first course or a side since it does very little to sustain me till the next meal more less for a workout. Not that I am against a well rounded diet including greens. My SIL swears off anything green and leafy and consumes very small amounts of protein 1-2 days before she runs marathons for obvious reasons.

 

Everyone's body is different. I do think it is key to identify a few things that are your own power food for fueling for races. It's def an important component to these tri's.

I dont understand - pizza makes your body feel bad?  Do you have a gluten allergy?  Problem with acidic tomato sauce?  Lactose intolerance from cheese?  Perhaps greasy pepperoni topping? 

For me, dough, olive oil, tomato sauce, cheese, and some green peppers and mushrooms seems reasonably healthy.

Depending on your dietary needs, ingredients like wheat/gluten, excess cheese, greasy pepperoni/sausage, etc. could definitely make you feel bad. But if it makes us feel bad why are we still eating it??

x4. I don't get pepperoni on pizza, because it's never as good as it is supposed to be, and the little pools of grease are pretty unappetizing. But plain pizza, veggie pizza, mushrooms, ham and pineapple? White pizza with brocolli and/or tomatoes?  I pretty much never have regrets. Except if I get an exceptionally good crust and the dogs give me the "sad eye" to get that last bite. Then I think "But I really liked that crust today!"

I adore pizza.  Of course, I am now allergic to gluten, dairy, soy, and eggs...just about all of which is in most pizzas.  And no, gluten free crusts just don't do it for me.  I make a gluten free crust and add toppings (minus the cheese) and it's OKAY, but absolutely nothing in this world tastes as good as yummy, greasy, New York Style pizza....I find that I can have it once in awhile as long as I don't try to have it all the time.  It's not like a peanut allergy...I don't go into shock and die if I have gluten/dairy/soy/eggs...I just don't always feel fabulous afterwards, especially if I have a lot several days in a row.

Anyway, I'm with ya...pizza is a gift from the gods, and healthy versions just don't do it.

My issue is the crust.  I have weight issues and am constantly challenged to maintain or lose weight.  Also type 2 diabetes runs on both sides of my family.  If I make it with whole grain or cauliflower crust, I'm usually ok, otherwise I feel like I have lead in my legs the next day.

Also pasta is a no-go for me.  One spaghetti dinner puts 5 lbs on me the next day, literally.  My best pre-race dinner is usually a small to medium steak, salad, and baked potato with sour cream.

Mmm.. pizza. So good. We probably have it every other week. Though I try to make it at home and control how much is on it. Love loading them with veggies! And is it weird that I'm looking forward to winter produce so I can make butternut squash-pesto pizza? Yum yum yum.

The only time I ever feel bad after eating pizza is when it is a frozen, self-rising type like DiGiorno.
Even then, I don't really feel "bad", it's just that it seems to suck the water out of my body and I have to drink a lot of fluids with it. I don't seem to get that as much with a freshly made crust.


As for healthy vs. less healthy..... I don't care which. I just want flavor.

The only issue I have with pizza is deciding what toppings I want.

I try to lean towards the more healthy versions when I can, things made with whole grain and natural cheeses, but that's tough. But sometimes I do just eat them for the calories.

I used to eat a Large Pizza and 1/2 medium Cheese Stix by myself.

That was not too healthy.

 

Now my wife and I share 1/2 large Pizza and 1/2 - 1 medium Cheese Stix.

So after reducing my pizza per sittin intake by 75% I have no issues with pizza, other than where to order it from...

With 3 boys (9, 7, and 3) Pizza seems to be a meal of choice at least 3 times per month.  Where I go wrong is when I also take an order of Boneless Buffalo Wings dipped in heavy ranch. 

That being said, we try to make home made pizza with tons of veggies on a flat bread crust.  Feels healthy. Kids won't touch it though.

There is something about Pizza Hut's Pepporoni Lovers Pan Pizza, with extra cheese. 

All of a sudden my yogurt and apple I had for lunch today seems very lame.

The bad thing about Pizza is it's entirely too easy to eat way, way too much.  I'm typically pretty good at portion control but put a good pie in front of me and it goes completely out the window.  I turn into the labrador that has a bag of food open on the floor with nobody guarding the gate.  Take my favorite pizza (Grimaldi's) and once I've consumed a whole large pizza I've successfully shoved anywhere from 2000-3500 calories in my pie hole.  It is so good though!

My mind has trouble trying to figure out how that crust would be, but the combination of toppings sounds incredible. It's like an insalata caprese pizza

I have. It's okay. Can't eat it with your hands, at least the recipe I tried.
Tryout the one I posted above if you like thick crust. It's grain and gluten free.

I'll definitely give it a try, Lisa.  Pizza has to be eaten with the hands otherwise I wouldn't even bother with crust.  Bummer.

Make your own. That is what I do. I cheat on the cheese and add more sauce and veggies. It makes my husband and kiddos upset but it still tastes good. Sometimes I will get the take and bakes and take some of the cheese off even (no one can even tell when I do that).
